Inheriting firearms from Grandfather out of State
Good Evening all!
I had a quick question regarding Inheriting firearms from my Grandfather across state lines from NJ. He passed about a week ago and has a total of 3 long guns and a pistol. My Wife and I are both gun owners and just recently moved to Easton from Virginia so I am not well informed on PA's gun laws yet regarding Inherited firearms. I understand that PA does not require registration of firearms and the chain of ownership for inherited firearms, Grandfather to Me. But I was not sure how PA to NJ inheritance and NJ law would affect that. I attempted to search for this scenario, but could not find an answer. I do apologize if there is one here within the forum.
Any help or a point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!Molon labe

Re: Inheriting firearms from Grandfather out of State
As far as I know, you will have to use a NJ FFL to transfer to a PA FFL and then pick it up as far as the pistol is concerned (Federal Law). Long guns may be the same from NJ. There is no registration in PA, but you may have to fill out the PA State Police "Record of Sale" at the PA FFL. If I am incorrect, the correction(s) will rapidly follow!! Welcome to PA. Dave_n

Re: Inheriting firearms from Grandfather out of State
Both Federal law and Pennsylvania law allow direct interstate transfer of inherited firearms to non-prohibited persons, without intervention of an FFL in either state, except of course for NFA firearms, which are unlikely in NJ.
It doesn't apply to sales from estates, only to inherited guns to heirs at law or heirs mentioned in a Will.
Estates have the option to use an FFL to protect themselves. It's not required.
I offer no opinion on NJ laws.Attorney Phil Kline, AKA gunlawyer001@gmail.com

Re: Inheriting firearms from Grandfather out of State
Thank you for that information! After reading your response "Inherited" may not have been my best choice of words. They are not being given to me out of law/Will. My Grandfather was a hunter and must have stored them in his attic. After his passing my Grandmother found them she asked If I wanted them. I am not sure if that changes anything. I just wanted to clarify that.

Re: Inheriting firearms from Grandfather out of State
I am actually not sure yet! Unfortunately my Grandmother is not well versed in firearms and having her take a photo and send it to me can be quite the challenge lol. At first I was under the impression it was just a single bolt action, but upon her searching the attic found 2 more rifles and a pistol. All she said was that the rifles looked like rifles -_- and the pistol was silver with a pearl handle. Going tomorrow to check them out! I will definitely update this though!
