    Default Some photojournalism..house fire

Some shots I took at a fire early friday morning. Nobody was hurt in the blaze, 22 firefighters responded on 5 apparatus. The 5th picture was submitted to the news..

Images removed because it's apperantly alright to steal my property.

    Very Nice!

And as others have asked, how DO you deal with the low light?

I try to take pictures at fires and they usually don't come out NEARLY as nice... like these:

dont meter your shot on the flames meter it against something semi-neutral and then bracket shots to find the best exposure. I usually end up closing down a stop to 2 stops sometimes at night depending on the scene. Esp. if it a black subject on a black background. Now if it was white on white you would open up two stops. Use a high ISO also 400-800. OR just use bracketing and pick the best shot.

Yes very good pictures. I am just curious, what was your shutter speed? Any time I try to take low light I have to use a tripod to keep the pictures from blurring. Very cool pictures, nice job!

    Nice work.

You should have contacted the local paper. Last time I got shots like that, they put one on the front page. Or at least send them to the fire department, the firefighters would probably appreciate it.

Since they have super-mega-gazillion candle power emergency lights, it makes it easier to get an available light shot.

Nice photos, but I'd like to point out how the asbestos based siding held up with the fire, sure there is some scorching, but nothing like what vinyl wouldv'e done!

    Thanks RF.

    Thanks. Yes a nikon d2h & d70.

    Very Nice!

Thanks 'dobie, yours are pretty good also. High ISO, big aperture and a good flash.

Thats pretty good advice. I just shoot and make adjustments 'on the fly'.

Thanks. I don't recall the shutter speed, it was always changing. Some were in the 1/30 range which takes a steady hand and practice with a d2 & big/heavy 80-200mm f/2.8 lens What gear and settings are you trying to use? I'm sure we can help you..

Thanks Vince. I submitted the 5th picture to the paper. I haven't looked yet to see if it's in there. I also sent it to the news (video/tv) channels but they used a 'day after' shot on their sites...lame. I have two pictures of helmets that were taken at fire scenes I'm giving to the FD. I even framed them I was/still am a volly FF for 13yrs.

    Nice photos
    Thanks Dave.

You can always tell a Nikon Photo. They have such deep color saturation..

I am a Canon user, but those colors almost make me want to switch
