    Default What Distance to Target

When you are at the range, what is the distance to target you generally shoot from and why.

When I'm at the range we generally shoot between 10 and ~25 yards depending on who else is there.

I'm looking to see what is the appropriate distance. I was happy with the 10yard shots with the XD45 this week but my 25 yd shots were pretty respectable also.

I usually stick between 50 and 200 yards.

    I shoot mostly rifle though.

For pistols I usually stay within 15 yards, up to 5.

With semi auto pistols, I stick with 15-5 (at 25, my sigma is not so hot - or the shooter isn't).
    With revolvers - 15-25 yards.
    Pocket guns - 5-10.

    for handgun...

2 yards (practicing shooting from retention, etc.) to 50 yards (pretty much just for fun)

most of my shots are taken from ranges 10 yards or closer. i spend a lot of time practicing drawing and placing 1 or 2 shots COM, doing a mozambique drills (2 COM then on in the occular cavity), bill drills (6 shots COM), shooting while moving, transitioning between targets, shooting one handed, etc.

i do also spend some time taking more precisely aimed shots from 15, 20, and 25 yards, though. and then back up to 50 yards just for the heck of it.

the appropriate ranges to shoot from depends entirely on what you are trying to accomplish. if you are practicing for self defense, it is good to remember that most self-defense shots are taken at very close ranges, often while running for cover or at least moving "off the X", and often with only one hand on the gun.

Contact distance out to 25 - 30 mtrs for handgun training. I do not have my range labeled or marked for distances. As we design scenarios, knowing the distance is not as important as making the impact seem more realistic. We may run several scenarios or drills and never even mention the distance it was engaged at. It is more like, "after I shot the guy out of the passenger side window, I got out of the car and I saw the target behind the wall". So I never concern myself with the numerical element of the distance I shoot, I just want to mix it up and vary all the elements of shooting. I shoot over, under, around and even through things at all sorts of distances, but not usually over 30 mtrs.

    Be safe (and flexible).

For handguns I shoot anywhere from 6 ft (from the hip) out to 25 yds. For rifles, from 25 yds on out...

Depends on what I'm shooting. My deer rifle I shoot at 100yds and out. Handguns I start at around 25ft, and move back from there.

With the rifle....as far as I can, usually 100+. I don't use a target, I shoot at a spot on the backstop so I can see the splash. I do the same with my .22 pistol. For SD practice 25yds is my max, way closer for the pocket gun, about 6 or 7 feet. For anything but the pocketgun if I can hit it at 25yds I'm going to hit it at 3 so I tend to stay at 25.
