    Default AK Firing pin replacement

    Hey all,

Need to replace a firing pin on an AK- was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to give me a basic walk-through. Does it just drop in, or is it more involved than that?

Any advice is most appreciated. I've worked on 1911s (mostly basic stuff), but this is new to me...and most of my tools are back in Tx.

Should I go to a gunsmith for it, or can I do it myself?

    Thanks in advance,

    Jade

EDIT: Crap, wrong part of the forum. Sorry, Mods! Would delete if I could figure out how

If you can drive out a pin, you can replace the firing pin yourself, here's a site that has good instructions on this.

    Ho, Ho, Ho.... funny man.

Oh, they break. Then again...I can fix it for under $20...and half of that is shipping.

But yeah, they just break less, and less expensively than some other options.

THey don't, We AK owners start threads like this so you AR people don't feel so bad.

    Kalashnikitty says:
    AK's don't break.
We just say that they do, so we have a reason to talk about them more often.

    Wow...

Fixed, at a total cost of $18- including new tools.

If I had an AR, that would get me, what, a new takedown pin? Maybe an ounce or two of half-synthetic teflon-infused lubricant?

Ah well. Thanks to all who provided assistance (Here's looking at you, Colis) or a laugh.

HA HA!!! the joke's on you!!

you dont need tools to fix an ak.

te punch you needed to change your fp was in the cleaning kit in yor buttstock. if the pin is too tight, yo can tap it with a rock

    AR-15 firing pin...$6
    Tools required...none.

If you wanted to go nuts I guess you could buy a titanium one for $30.
I've personally seen more broken/needing to be fixed AK's at the range than AR's (as in weapon won't function correctly without some adjustment). But that's just me.

They're both machines, they can both break.

I was hoping someone would say that.

As a matter of fact, my AK did not come with a kit in the buttstock. The disadvantage of purchasing a used weapon, I'm afraid. The advantage being it was inexpensive.

The joke is most certainly on me on a great range of subjects, but this doesn't appear to be one of them.

To be completely honest, I'd love an AR in one of the more useful calibers, like 6.5 or 6.8....the AR-10 in .308 would be ideal. BUT, I could get 2 to 3 entry level AK's for what an entry-level AR in those calibers would cost me, and the AR ammo's much more expensive. So for now, I've got a "good enough" carbine for what I need, and will improve when my salary does.

the important thing is being able to shoot at all, right?
