Sheriff Judd: Homeowner shoots, kills intruder in self-defense while family was inside house
The homeowner described the burglar as "out of control," according to law enforcement.

FROSTPROOF, Fla. * A homeowner shot and killed a burglar in self-defense early Sunday morning in Frostproof, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said.

Deputies say Jory Plummer broke into the man's home around 1 a.m. while he, his wife and their three children were sleeping.

The man's wife heard banging on the front door and woke him. When he went to check it out, he saw the front door had been forced open, so he grabbed a handgun.

Investigators say the husband found Plummer outside, in front of the home, "yelling obscenities at him."

According to law enforcement, the man told Plummer "numerous times" to leave, but investigators say Plummer refused.

"The husband described Plummer as 'out of control,'" the sheriff's office wrote in a news release.

Deputies say Plummer ran and charged at the homeowner, who * "in fear for his life" * fired one round, hitting him.

But, authorities say Plummer wasn't done. The sheriff's office says Plummer walked a few feet, turned around and then charged again, leading the husband to shoot him a second time.

Deputies responded to the scene and tried lifesaving efforts, but Plummer died at Sebring Hospital.

*People have a right to be safe in their home, and when necessary, defend that safety. At this point in the investigation, the evidence indicates that the resident acted in self-defense," Sheriff Judd wrote in a statement.

    An investigation is underway.

According to the sheriff's office, Plummer*s criminal history includes nine felonies and nine misdemeanors, including:

    Sexual Assault
    Domestic Violence - Battery
    Tampering with Evidence
    Forgery
    Resisting a Law Enforcement Officer
    Possession of Marijuana
Driving on a Suspended Driver*s License
    Violation of Probation
    Failure to Appear.

Illinois police release surveillance video after homeowner fatally shot masked intruder
FOX TV Digital TeamApril 12, 2020

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. -- Police in Arlington Heights, Illinois released home surveillance video showing a home invasion in which a homeowner shot and killed one of the armed assailants.

Doorbell video of the April 4 fatal encounter in the north Chicago suburb, obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, shows two men wearing surgical masks and gloves ring the doorbell of a home on North Evergreen Avenue. Unedited video was leaked on the internet days before the release.

Police said the two assailants, Bradley Finnan and Larry Brodacz, were armed with a gun and knife when they forced their way into the home with the intent to rob the family.

The homeowner fought back, chasing Finnan outside and punching him to the ground, as seen in the video.

The homeowner then returned inside the home, out of view of the camera, where police said he found Brodacz pointing a gun at his wife and two children, police said.

The homeowner retrieved the family gun from a safe and confronted Brodacz, police said. During a struggle, the homeowner fired a single shot into Brodacz*s abdomen. He fell to the ground and died in the home, police said.

Finnan, 38, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, was arrested nearby and later charged with felony murder and two counts of home invasion, police said.

A Cook County judge ordered Finnan held without bail -- due back in court April 21 in Rolling Meadows.

APD detectives say March fatal shooting was self-defense

Detectives have determined that the fatal shooting of a man last month at a Northeast Albuquerque apartment was a justifiable homicide.

Gilbert Gallegos, an Albuquerque police spokesman, said the March 19 death of Dominic Lueras, 39, is being considered a self-defense shooting after “consulting with the District Attorney’s Office.”

Prosecutors dismissed the murder case against Manuel Vargas, 24, on March 31. Gallegos did not say why detectives deemed the killing justifiable.

Vargas and Lueras got into a dispute in the parking lot of the Sun Pointe Park Apartments. Police say both men pulled out guns and Vargas shot Lueras, killing him.

Vargas was arrested the day of the shooting and booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center. He was released April 1.

The day before Vargas was released he was hospitalized – to get stitches over his eye and X-rays for “possible facial fractures” – after allegedly getting into a fight with another inmate.

According to court records, a jail guard tried to stop the fight between the two men and Vargas tried to punch the guard, but missed, and the guard used pepper spray on him.

Authorities say both inmates were put in restraints and then Vargas “intentionally and continuously spit blood” onto the “hands, arms and uniforms” of three jail guards.

Vargas was charged with battery upon a peace officer and attempted battery upon a peace officer in that incident.

Beverly man, 69, with concealed carry license, shoots at 3 would-be robbers, injuring 1, cops say
    Katherine Rosenberg-Douglas
    Chicago Tribune |

    Mar 10, 2021 at 5:18 PM

A 69-year-old concealed carry license holder defended himself Tuesday night against a group of teenagers in a stolen vehicle when they approached him in Beverly and demanded his belongings, police said.

Instead of handing over his wallet or other items, the man drew his handgun and shot toward the group of boys trying to rob him about 10:35 p.m. in the 10600 block of South Leavitt Street, according to a statement from police. One of the attackers was shot in the knee, police said.

Two of the three people have since been charged, Karie James, a police spokeswoman, said. They were 15 and 16 years old, she said. The person who was shot in the knee has not been charged with a crime and James did not release his age.

When the 69-year-old shot at the three people, they ran back to a gray Ford Fusion and drove off, authorities said. Police initially misidentified the color of the vehicle as red.

They managed to get as far as the Gresham neighborhood, but the Ford crashed in the 8700 block of South Vincennes Avenue, according to police. All three people took off running, but soon were caught by Chicago police officers.

Authorities later learned that Ford Fusion had been reported stolen Sunday night, James said.

The three were taken to an area hospital for evaluation.

ECSO: Homeowner holds burglary suspects at gunpoint until deputies arrive
    Carey CoxFeb 12, 2021 / 06:29 PM CST
    Northwest Florida

ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. (WKRG) — A homeowner held two men at gunpoint after catching them burglarizing his property, according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called to the 4200 block of Molino Road on Thursday for a burglary in progress. When they arrived at the scene, they found the homeowner holding two suspects at gunpoint. The homeowner told deputies when he arrived home that evening, he saw a strange vehicle parked down the road and found Jonathan Franklin and Steven Liechty walking around on his property.

A search of the suspects’ car revealed two guns and stolen items that were taken from vehicles in previous car burglaries in the same area. Deputies say Franklin also possessed a bag of methamphetamine that he tried to ditch in the back of a patrol car but was caught.

Franklin was arrested and charged with loitering and prowling, two counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a controlled substance, introduction of contraband onto a correction facility, and tampering with evidence. Liechty was arrested and charged with loitering and prowling as well as possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

“If these two would have been working or doing something productive, a law-abiding citizen would not have had to risk his own safety to put a stop to their actions. We are glad no one was hurt by their criminal endeavor. Don’t steal other people’s property,” said Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons.

Broward man pulls gun to fend off break-in — but where was BSO?
    Layron Livingston
TAMARAC, Fla. – After calling 911, a 70-year-old Broward County resident pulled out a handgun and eventually scared off a man trying to break into his house.

Now, he and his neighbors are wondering why Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies didn’t respond.

Listening to the recorded 911 call, you can hear Bill Norkunas of Tamarac tell a dispatcher that “I got a guy trying to break into my house!”

It was about 9:30 p.m. on Nov. 7, and Norkunas had just stepped out of the shower. His security camera was rolling as a man started bashing his front door with a brick.

Norkunas spent nearly 15 minutes on the phone with 911 dispatchers — naked, on crutches and with a gun pointed at that suspect.

“I pointed the handgun through the glass at his face,” recalls Norkunas, who used those crutches because he suffers from polio. “And I said, ‘Go away, or I will shoot you.’”

Thankfully, the intruder couldn’t make it through Norkunas’ hurricane-resistant glass.

“And all the while, I’ve got 911 on my cell phone — and I’m looking down the road ... and no deputies there,” Norkunas adds. “Nobody came.”

Neighbors also called 911, including one of them twice, trying to get help.

BSO sent Local 10 News a statement saying that a thorough review of their response to the incident is ongoing.

“Within days of the incident in Tamarac, the Broward Sheriff’s Office began a thorough review into how the deputies on scene handled the response to this fluid and rapidly evolving situation,” the statement read. “The review into this incident is ongoing. The Broward Sheriff’s Office responds to tens of thousands of calls for service each year. The vast majority of these calls are handled appropriately with satisfactory outcomes. BSO constantly reviews and assesses its responses to emergency calls in order to provide the highest level of service to the public.”

Timothy Johnson, 23, was eventually arrested after he reportedly walked up the street, away from Norkunas’ home.

Norkunas’ confidence, though, is forever shaken.

“Don’t depend on 911,” he said. “Have a back-up plan.”

MANHUNT OVER: Man who allegedly shot woman in face, broke into Lindale-area home in custody

Samuel Salas, 34, was taken into custody Monday morning.

SMITH COUNTY, Texas * The man who was at the center of a Smith County manhunt after officials say he shot a woman in the face and broke into a home in the Lindale area is in custody.
According to the Smith County Sheriff's Office, Samuel Salas, 34, was arrested Monday morning at a residence in the 1800 block of Farm-to-Market Road 1801, just outside of Mineola.

According to the Smith County Sheriff's Office, Salas shot a woman in the face early Friday morning near a driveway of a home in the 18600 block of County Road 498 in Lindale. Officials say Salas ran from the home and the victim is stable at a local hospital.

Around 7:15 p.m. on Saturday, deputies responded to a home invasion call in the 13700 block of Shannon Drive near Lindale. The SCSO says Salas attempted to rob the homeowner, but the homeowner pulled a gun on Salas and he ran away.

Salas' acts caused Lindale ISD to go into a lockout on Monday morning which meant all entrances to the school were locked, no visitors were allowed on campus and no outdoor activities would take place. The lockout has been lifted with the capture of Salas and the district is operating as normal.
