Porch pirate doesn’t get far after homeowner opens the door with a gun, SC cops say
    By Charles DuncanJanuary 20, 2020 10:05 AM
A man is accused of trying to steal a package sitting in front of someone’s front door — but he chose the wrong house, a South Carolina sheriff’s office said.

When the alleged package thief got his loot to the car, the homeowner came out with a gun and held the man until deputies could come to arrest him, the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies say Marvin Marshall stole the package in Moncks Corner. He’s been charged with petty larceny.

The sheriff’s office said on Facebook, “Marshall advised deputies he was driving around looking for lawns to cut when his car began to have trouble. Marshall pulled over and began to see what was wrong with his car.”

“While checking on his car, Marshall noticed a package by someone else’s front door that enticed him. Marshall decided to knock on the front door.... there was no answer. At that moment Marshall thought it would be a genius idea to take the package and put it into his car,” the sheriff’s office said.

The homeowner was actually home and “came outside with his firearm and ordered Marshall to give the package back,” according to deputies.

The suspect brought the package back to the home and was held at gunpoint until police showed up to arrest him.

Robbery suspects bailed out of this car and ducked through the fence at the end of a police pursuit in July. One of those who ran was shot and critically injured by a resident in a nearby backyard, and two others were taken into custody, police say. Kelsy Schlotthauer/Tulsa World file
A midtown resident who was arrested in late July after shooting a teenager who hopped a fence into his backyard while running from police will not face charges.

The Tulsa County District Attorney*s Office declined to file the Tulsa Police Department*s recommended charge of shooting with intent to kill against Zachariah Kade Cook, Tulsa Police Sgt. Shane Tuell said Thursday.

*Under Oklahoma law, he had a right to stand his ground * ,* Tulsa County District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler said Friday.

Police arrested Cook, 28, after he fired at least two shots at a juvenile robbery suspect who was fleeing from police through Cook*s backyard. The boy was struck once in the abdomen.

The juvenile reportedly was among a group who had robbed at least two people earlier in the day. One of the victims was a man mowing his yard.

Police later pursued a vehicle thought to have been involved in the robberies; the pursuit ended when the car crashed into a chain link gate near 12th Street and Fulton Avenue. Three people took off on foot just down the street from Cook*s house.

Andrew Peyton, 20, was caught by officers before he could jump the fence into Cook*s backyard. Jalen Cooper, 17, reportedly surrendered to officers after his younger brother, Jadin Cooper, 15, was shot by Cook.

Peyton was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, and the Cooper brothers face the same charges as youthful offenders, according to online court records.

Peyton was serving two concurrent three-year deferred sentences for an assault and battery conviction in March, and he remained in the Tulsa County jail Friday morning in lieu of $75,000 bond, according to jail records. His next court date is Sept. 27.

Cook is also listed as Zachariah Kade McGuire in police reports. Court records indicate that he changed his name in 2015.

SCVNews.com | Homeowner Fires Warning Shot; Deputies Arrest Attempted Burglary Suspect | 09-04-2020
    Monday, Jun 26, 2017
Deputies responded to a burglary attempt gone awry Thursday, after an older female victim pulled a gun on an alleged home invader and fired a warning shot, according to Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station officials.

Deputies received a call around 1:40 p.m. about the possible burglary in the 15000 block of Baker Canyon Road, near Vasquez Canyon Road and Sierra Highway, Sgt. Matt Bengtson confirmed.

“The suspect allegedly made entry into her home,” said Shirley Miller, spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Station. “The victim went into a room of her house, and it sounds like the suspect made entry into the room where the victim was.”

The suspect reportedly was unarmed, but the victim was not, Miller noted, citing a report taken at the scene.

Ultimately, the victim fired a shot into the air and then ordered the suspect onto the ground, according to Sheriff’s Station deputies.

When deputies arrived, they arrested Collin Keoshian, 29, of Valencia, who was lying on the front lawn of the victim’s home, according to the Sheriff’s Station report.

Keoshian was booked on suspicion of a felony burglary charge at the Sheriff’s Station and then later released on $50,000 bail.

Teen shot during home invasion arrested
Police also arrested another man, but later dropped the charges against him

By Curtis Heyen, Alex Onken, and Jeff Ferrell January 28, 2021 at 3:51 PM CST - Updated January 28 at 6:51 PM
SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) * A Shreveport teenager has been arrested in connection with a foiled burglary during which a resident shot an intruder, police confirm.

It was about midnight Thursday when a family heard someone breaking into their home in the 3800 block of Fairfield Avenue. That*s at Dudley Drive and a few blocks from Mall St. Vincent in Shreveport*s Fairfield neighborhood.

The homeowner told police that someone was trying to force his way in through a rear window.

The resident, who was inside at the time, armed himself with a gun and fired at the intruder, grazing him in his right hip.

The homeowner then held the intruder at gunpoint until police arrived.

Officers found the wounded man, later identified as 18-year-old Morgan Matthews, outside in the back of the residence.

    Morgan Matthews, 18
    Morgan Matthews, 18 (Source: SPD)
Matthews, who was booked into Shreveport City Jail at 12:10 a.m. Thursday, told officers that 21-year-old Benjamin Elmajian was with him. Police found Elmajian at his residence and took him into custody at 12:54 a.m. , booking records show.

*Upon reviewing the surveillance video, detectives were able to confirm that Matthews was attempting to break into the residence when he was shot,* police Cpl. Glen Heckard said.

*Initially, both Matthews and Elmajian were charged. However, due to a lack of evidence at this time, charges were dropped against Elmajian.*

Matthews remains in the City Jail, where he was booked on one count each of home invasion and escape, booking records show.

People who live in the neighborhood where the home invasion occurred say that such crime is becoming all too common and that many fear the situation will only get worse unless more can be done.

*I know this town has always had a problem with poverty and whatnot. And recent events have not helped out. I know that,* Shreveport resident Frederick Colbert told KSLA News 12.

The city*s longstanding challenges have only been exacerbated by the seemingly endless COVID-19 pandemic and its economic fallout * businesses closing and jobs being lost, he said.

Click here to watch the live newscasts.

    Suspect shot during home invasion
Shortly before Colbert started back on his walk in the neighborhood, he lamented current conditions.

*I*ve lived in this area for a long time. And it*s not getting any better. And when I hear something like this it definitely causes concern.*

He*s not alone. Retired neurosurgeon Dr. Warren Long lives right across the street. We*re the ones who informed him of the overnight home invasion. But he wasn*t surprised.

Reporter: *Did you hear about that home invasion last night?*

    Dr. Warren Long/Neighbor: *No, what?*

    Reporter: *The home invasion?*

Reporter: *(It) Happened at that house right over there.*

    Dr. Long: *Right here?*

Dr. Long: *Oh really. That*s the second time.*

    Reporter: *That*s the second time?*

    Reporter: *Since when?*

Dr. Long: *Last year it was invaded too.*

Whatever the reason for the surge in crime, nearby resident Jim Johnson says it means having to take measures, if necessary, to protect him and his family.

*Makes me happy that I have weapons and I know how to use them.*

In fact, Johnson says the next time there*s a home invasion like this - it could prove deadly.

*More of them are going to get killed if they keep doing this stuff.*

Unfortunately, neighbors like Dr. Long are sadly convinced that with the current economic conditions in this country, and right here at home, crime will likely get even worse before it gets better.

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -- A woman inside of her house fired one fatal shot at an attempted burglar in the southeast valley on Saturday afternoon, police said.

The woman was home alone about 11:15 a.m. on the 7000 block of Knoll View Drive, near Spencer Street and Warm Springs Road, when she heard glass shatter.

Moments before, she had heard a knock on the door and ignored it, police said.

Las Vegas homicide Lt. Ray Spencer said a 30-year-old man broke through the woman's sliding glass back door and went into her home. The woman went to her bedroom to get her handgun when the suspect confronted her, Spencer said.

The woman told police the man lunged toward her and she shot him once. He then ran out of the house through the broken door and drove off in a Kia.

Spencer said the woman then called 9-1-1 to report the incident. A nearby patrol officer found the suspect in his Kia about a half-mile away at the intersection of Warm Springs and Spencer Street after having hit a few other cars.

The suspect was taken to Sunrise Hospital where he died, Spencer said.

Police believe the suspect may have waiting in his car for several hours before the shooting, casing the area. The woman acted in self-defense.

Spencer said detectives would remain on scene for several hours.

Intruders shot by tenant at Puyallup apartment complex
PUYALLUP, Wash. — Police say two of three men who planned on burglarizing an apartment or robbing its occupant were shot by the tenant in Puyallup.

Police say it happened at 10:50 p.m. Tuesday at the Riverside Park Apartments in the 3100 block of East Main Avenue.

Investigators said arriving officers found a “very chaotic scene” outside the building with reports of people and vehicles fleeing the area.

The victims, both in their early 20s, were found in different locations.

“We located a male subject down on the ground off the edge of the roadway. We also located a second subject suffering from gunshot wounds at an apartment complex at the back of that complex nearby,” said Puyallup Police Chief Scott Engle.

Both were taken to a local trauma center in serious condition.

Police said an initial investigation leads them to believe that the two men who were shot went to the Riverside Park Apartments with a third man to commit a burglary or home invasion robbery.

The three were said to be armed when they entered an unlocked apartment, where a 19-year-old man, who was asleep on the couch, woke up and immediately began firing at the intruders. Two of the men were shot several times.

The intruders then fled and tried to make it to a car in a nearby parking lot.

Police said the tenant who shot the men initially fled afterward, but later returned, gave his weapon to police and is cooperating with investigators.

Police believe the shooting was not a random act of violence.

“The folks in the apartment have a connection with at least one of the people who were (there) and our investigators will have to put those pieces together,” said Engle.

A man and a woman were also in the back bedroom of the apartment when the shots were fired.

Detectives are evaluating forensic evidence, witness statements and are working to confirm the identities of those who may be connected to the crime.

Investigators said they will evaluate the tenant’s claim of self-defense to make sure it was within state law. They are also speaking with the suspects.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Puyallup Police tip line at 253-770-3343.
