BURKE COUNTY, N.C. (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) – A masked man, who was shot by his grandfather after breaking into his Burke County home and demanding money, has died in the hospital.

Jessie DeWayne Gibson, 34, passed away on Tuesday evening, April 20, at Carolinas Medical Center.

Gibson was shot multiple times by his grandfather, George Gibson Sr., 76, after Gibson forcibly entered his grandfather’s home on 38th Street NW in Hickory and tried to steal money.

According to the Long View Police Department, Gibson forcibly entered his grandfather’s home with his entire face and head concealed with a piece of clothing. Once inside the home, Gibson physically assaulted his grandfather, attempted to steal cash, and pointed a pistol at him.

Gibson Sr. shot his grandson during the incident, police said. At the time of the incident, Gibson Sr. was home alone and did not know the intruder was his grandson.

After the break-in and shooting, Gibson ran away from the residence and was located a short time later at Lowman’s hotel. He was taken to the hospital for treatment before he passed away.

During the crime scene search, Gibson’s cell phone was found in his grandfather’s driveway, and the mask covering was found in a wooded area a short distance away from Gibson Sr.’s home.

The investigation revealed that Gibson needed money to pay his rent, police said.

The District Attorney concluded that Gibson kicked in the front door, assaulted his grandfather, and attempted to rob him. It was determined that Gibson Sr. was in fear for his life and only using deadly force after his grandson pointed a gun at him.

The DA determined no charges would be filed against Gibson Sr. and his actions were justified.

Sad ending for the victim, but at least his wife was able to protect herself.

Gunman shoots Texas man dead, shot at by victim's widow, then gunned down and killed by police

An intruder shot a homeowner dead as he worked in his shed, got shot at by the woman he'd just widowed, then gunned down and killed by police.

The unidentified killer drove up to the victim's backyard on Clutter Avenue in San Antonio at around 6 p.m. local time and began firing at the 37-year-old victim, who died at the scene.

'A person drove up, went into the shed, and shot him and killed him right there,' San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said.

A friend who was working in the shed with the victim managed to get away, he said.

The victim's wife was able to fire a few shots at the suspect. It is unclear whether any of those bullets struck the suspect.

The violent sequence of events came to a conclusion shortly afterwards, when five police officers surrounded the house.

They were promptly shot at by the gunman, McManus said, returned fire, and killed the 49-year-old.

'So we have two dead people in the backyard,' McManus said. 'One in the shed who was shot by the intruder [and] the intruder was shot by police after he fired at them.'

Children inside the home were uninjured, according to local news station KSAT , and local residents were shocked by the violence, saying it is normally a very safe street.

'I grew up in this home and I've always seen it as a safe neighborhood,' one woman, who the station did not identify, told the news crew.

'It's kind of scary that this is starting to happen.'

Cops have yet to disclose a possible motive for the first shooting, and have refused to say whether the gunman knew his victim.

McManus did say, however, that the gunman seemed to be lingering in the backyard before the police arrived on the scene.

'There were weird things he was doing back there,' McManus said, refusing to elaborate. 'I don't know if he was waiting for police to arrive or what.'

He said the officers each had one to 10 years in the department.

Homeowner shoots, kills burglar who tried to enter her home, says Sheriff Judd
POLK COUNTY, Fla. * The Polk County Sheriff's Office is investigating a deadly shooting Saturday morning.

Sheriff Grady Judd said the incident happened just before 6:40 a.m. on Ellie Road in unincorporated Auburndale.

Sheriff Judd said two couples went out for the evening Friday night and all came to a home around 4 a.m. A heated argument then happened between one couple.

The boyfriend left the home with the other man and went to his car, while the girlfriend and the other woman stayed inside the home.

Sheriff Judd said the boyfriend left in his car, and when he got to the end of the road, he told the other man he was going back for his girlfriend.

The other man tried to tell the boyfriend to just go home and leave, however, the boyfriend insisted on going back to the home.

When the boyfriend got back to the home, he kicked the door demanding the girlfriend to go with him. However, no one answered the door.

The boyfriend then went back to his car and picked up a tire iron and headed toward a window, Sheriff Judd said.

Sheriff Judd said the boyfriend screamed that if he was not let in, he would break in through the window. Again, no one answered.

He then proceeded to break the screen and the glass window trying to enter the home, Sheriff Judd said.

The homeowner, the other woman, shot and killed him. The boyfriend died instantly.

He was later identified as Joshua Mathieu of Lakeland.

"Had our suspect in the home invasion listened to his friend, and gotten back into the vehicle and left, he would be alive to continue his domestic conversation with his girlfriend," said Sheriff Judd.

The two women were the only ones inside the home at the time of the shooting.

"You have the right to protect yourself in your home and be free from home invaders and armed burglars. He was armed with a tire iron and made an attempt to come into the window," Sheriff Judd said.

    This is an ongoing investigation.

Gonzalez said the homeowner, who he did not identify, opened fire on the men with a shotgun after they entered the trailer in the Houston suburb of Channelview on Monday morning.

A witness told authorities that there may have been a fourth person who fled before the group entered the home, Gonzalez said. Investigators have not yet spoken to the person.

A man who identified himself as a cousin of the homeowner told NBC affiliate KPRC that his relative was shot in the leg and back. He spent Monday in surgery, Cesar Lopez said.

Officials said it was unclear why the men had targeted the home or what they wanted, but that a car that may have been theirs was left outside running.

They could have been *planning to break in and make a quick getaway,* Gonzalez said.

Homeowner shoots, kills intruder who was ‘going wild’ in Lakeland
    WFLA 8 On Your Side StaffAug 29, 2020 / 07:46 AM EDT
    Polk County

POLK COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — A man acting erratically was shot and killed in Lakeland Friday morning after he burst through a home and threw glass at the homeowner, authorities said.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd shared information regarding the incident at a press conference Friday morning, saying the man had gone on a rampage after crashing his vehicle on Old Polk City Road around 6 a.m.

Judd said the suspect, identified as 45-year-old Mayson Armando Ortiz-Vazquez of Orlando, had traveled with a woman from Orlando to meet someone in Polk County.

The preliminary investigation shows Ortiz-Vazquez traveled to Polk County to buy and use drugs, according to the sheriff’s office.

The woman in his vehicle said he started acting erratically before crashing the vehicle through a fence. Judd said there were marks from the vehicle all over the road.

After the crash, Judd said the man ran up to a school bus that had stopped to pick up a child.

Polk County Public Schools identified the bus driver as Margie Yzaguirre, who had just picked up her first student when she encountered Ortiz-Vazquez.

“He comes to my student door. He has blood dripping down his arm, and he starts banging on the doors to get in,” Yzaguirre said, according to a Facebook post from the school district.

“The school bus driver was a hero. She kept the doors locked. She didn’t let him in,” said Sheriff Grady Judd.

    No one was hurt.

Judd said the man ran up to two other drivers and jumped on their vehicles.

“Our suspect is 6-foot, 250 pounds. He just jumped on a car and broke the front windshield out,” said Sheriff Judd.

After that incident, deputies said the man walked up to a nearby home and burst through the front glass door. Judd said a 9-year-old boy, his parents and two grandparents were inside the home at the time.

Judd said the boy’s father grabbed his gun while someone else called 911. The family tried to calm the man down, but he chucked a piece of glass at the homeowner. That’s when the boy’s father opened fire, shooting and injuring the suspect.

“I can tell you that man tried to get the suspect under control a lot longer than I would have,” Sheriff Judd said. “When that dude hit the door, it would’ve been curtains for him at that point in time. But he did everything he could to avoid having to shoot him even though he was in his house going wild.”

Ortiz-Vazquez was taken to Lakeland Regional Hospital and pronounced deceased.

Ortiz-Vazquez has been to state prison once and his prior criminal history consists of five felonies and four misdemeanors. Charges include felony battery, burglary, obstruction of justice, filing a false report and contempt, according to the sheriff’s office.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing. Findings will be handed over to the state’s attorney’s office to determine whether the shooting was justified.

LOS ANGELES - A homicide investigation was underway after shots rang out in a quiet San Fernando Valley neighborhood on Thursday morning, police said.

The Los Angeles Police Department said they began receiving multiple 911 calls from neighbors just before 5:30 a.m.

    "I think I heard about 5 shots," a neighbor told FOX 11.

The shooting was reported in the Sherman Village area near the intersection of West Magnolia Boulevard and Coldwater Canyon Avenue.

A homeowner told investigators he witnessed a man that he believed was casing the neighborhood and thought he was planning to rob a home or a car.

When the homeowner confronted the suspect, the suspected burglar reportedly pulled out a gun from his vehicle when the homeowner also took out a gun and fired shots, witnesses said.

The suspect then lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a nearby tree.

LAPD said the homeowner was waiting for officers when they arrived and was performing CPR on the man he shot.

Investigation underway following deadly shooting in Sherman Village

"Well, we live in Los Angeles. So, it feels like a nice and quiet neighborhood, but the reality is, there are things going on all the time in LA," a neighbor who heard the gunshots said.

LAPD said the homeowner was cooperative upon questioning.

The suspected burglar was described as a man in his 50s and his name has not been released.

LAPD detectives were reviewing security camera footage.

    The investigation is ongoing.

Homeowner shoots, injures intruder near downtown Las Vegas

Homeowner shoots and injuries intruder near downtown Las Vegas
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is investigating a shooting near downtown Las Vegas.

The incident took place around 5:23 p.m. in the 100 block of North 15th Street at the Fremont Villas.

"It's shocking, and the neighborhood needs to step up," said nearby neighbor BruceSchilke.

According to police, a homeowner was inside his apartment when a man unknown to him, attempted to burglarize it.

"This area is pretty calm. It's just mostly like drugs and stuff. People get into fights but not breaking into houses," said Harley Gill, who lives at 15th and Fremont.

At some point, the homeowner fired at least one round at the suspect, striking the burglar.

A neighbor across the street defends the victim's actions.

"Thank God the homeowner had a gun and protected himself," said Schilke. "These home invasions have got to stop."

The injured suspect left the scene but was located near 14th Street and Fremont near a convenience store.

A clerk at the store showed News 3 video from around the time the burglary happened of a customer they say came in with a bullet wound.

You can see him in the footage walking in with a black hoodie.

"He went and got a beer and came up to me and said I need a beer," the clerk said.

That's when the clerk said she noticed the bullet wound.

"The girl was behind him and calling for an ambulance for him, and she told me that he was the one who got shot, and I could see a hole," she said.

Once the man went outside, the clerk says she saw him with police.

"He was right out front and they put his hands behind his back and had him on the ground," she said.

The suspect was transported to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

    This is an on-going investigation.
