PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Philadelphia police say a woman turned the tables on an intruder early Sunday morning, shooting and critically injuring him. Police responded to the home in the 3100 block of Arbor Street at about 2:50 a.m. The woman told police she shot the man once in the leg as he was trying to break into her home.

Police say the gun the woman used was "legally registered".

Police say two teens, ages 14 and 15, called for a Lyft ride on the 6600 block of North 7th Street, and when the driver arrived things quickly turned violent. According to police, the two attempted to take the 50-year-old driver's car.

One of the two teens pulled a gun and threatened the Lyft driver, but he had a license to carry and pulled out his own weapon, according to investigators.

Police say the driver shot the 14-year-old suspect in the leg. The 15-year-old stayed at the scene as police arrived. Investigators recovered the gun the teens used and it turned out to be a BB gun.

The Lyft driver was not injured during the incident.

Authorities said it happened just before midnight on Monday at an apartment complex on Glenwood Drive in southwest Atlanta.

Shooting in self defense? This is what Georgia law says about it
A criminal defense attorney and the Bibb County Sheriff's Office weighed in.

    Author: Zach Merchant

MACON, Ga. * An attempted robbery in Macon ended with the alleged thief at the emergency room after a restaurant clerk he tried to rob shot him.

That's according to the Bibb County Sheriff's Office.

RELATED: Macon man tries to rob restaurant, gets shot by employee

They say it happened at the China Inn restaurant on Vineville Avenue Saturday night.

The suspect is now in jail and the clerk who shot him is not--nor will he be.

The sheriff*s office says they don't intend to charge him with anything, because in his case, the shooting was legally justified.

It wasn't the only self defense shooting across the country this weekend.

Sunday morning, a man opened fire in a Texas church, killing two people. An armed parishioner quickly shot and killed the gunman.

"The threat was stopped thanks to the quick and heroic actions of the safety members inside that church," said White Settlement Police Chief JP Bevering.

Closer to home and a day later, the Bibb County Sheriff's Office says a man walked into the China Inn restaurant in Macon, pointed a gun at the clerk, and demanded money.

Instead, the clerk drew their own gun and eventually shot and wounded the suspect.

That clerk, the sheriff's office says, will not face any charges which brings us to the question: What are the circumstances under which Georgia law permits a person to shoot someone else?

Defense attorney Frank Hogue has the answer, describing Georgia's self-defense laws as some of the broadest in the country.

"If you are in danger of being killed yourself or in danger of receiving a serious bodily injury, and you are armed, you may shoot to kill, and it applies wherever you are. Your home, your business, on the street," he said.

Hogue says that stance flows from a part of the Georgia Code that revolves around a specific law known as "No duty to retreat."

It says citizens have "no duty to retreat and (have) the right to stand his or her ground and use force.. .including deadly force," in defense of "self or others," of "habitation," or "in defense of property other than a habitation."

A related law, 16-3-21, shines more light on the issue. It reads:

"A person is justified in threatening or using force against another when and to the extent that he or she reasonably believes that such threat or force is necessary too defend himself or herself or a third person against such other's imminent use of unlawful force."

    However, there are limitations.

16-3-21 says a person can only use force when "he or she reasonably believes that such force is necessary to prevent death or great bodily injury to himself or herself or a third person or to prevent the commission of a forcible felony."

Other restrictions also play a role, including a stipulation that citizens may not use force while attempting themselves to commit a felony.

Bibb County Sheriff's Office Lieutenant Billy Skinner, who helps oversee the department's training program, agrees with Hogue's take on the law but also stresses how serious it is.

"In our world the use of deadly force is always a last resort," he said. "Hopefully for every civilian they're never confronted with a situation where that becomes a final option."

Skinner added that, "if you choose to carry, make sure you're carrying legally, make sure you know the capabilities of what you're carrying and your capabilities with it."

He says gun safety classes, like the ones the sheriff's office offers, can help people who are new to gun ownership learn the basics and familiarize themselves with their weapon.

As for the China Inn case, a store employee we spoke to Monday said they had no comment, except to say they were thankful nobody on their staff was hurt.

2 church members, gunman killed in White Settlement church shooting
Officials with the FBI said the suspected shooter had been investigated by law enforcement agencies before.

Updated at 1:09 p.m. Monday with the names of people involved.

Police say congregants shot and killed a man Sunday after he opened fire in a church near Fort Worth, Texas.

White Settlement Police Department Chief J.P. Bevering said two people shot by the suspect also died in the Sunday morning attack at the West Freeway Church of Christ.

Bevering said the assailant fired at least once before the *heroic actions* of the congregants cut his assault short.

Jack Wilson said he was the man who shot the gunman. The two people killed have been identified as 67-year-old Richard White of River Oaks and 64-year-old Tony Wallace of Fort Worth.

Authorities have identified the shooter as Keith Thomas Kinnunen, 43, from River Oaks.

RELATED: Meet the man who 'took out' the active shooter at a Texas church

"Our hearts and prayers go out to all the families that were affected by this incident," said Fort Worth police spokesman Mike Drivdahl.

Fort Worth police received reports of an active threat around 11:20 a.m. at West Freeway Church of Christ. The church is located at 1900 South Las Vegas Trail in White Settlement, which is near Fort Worth.

A live stream of the worship service shows a person wearing a large coat stand up and then pull out what appears to be a shotgun as communion was finishing. The shooter appears to fire twice before another person appears to shoot back.

RELATED: Texas law allowing people to carry guns in church went into effect Sept. 1

The video has since been removed from YouTube.

The shooting lasted about six seconds, the live stream shows.

Many people in the congregation ducked under church pews while others rushed toward the shooter, holding up handguns, the video shows.

A church leader then told people to quiet down and be seated.

"Everything is under control. Our security team did everything they needed to do," the person said.

He urged everyone to stay calm and file out of the sanctuary. In the video, he said one church member was harmed.

"We had a gentleman that came in armed to do harm," the church leader said.

In the chaos after the shooting, church members can be heard screaming and crying.

One person yelled, "I love you daddy."

Senior minister Britt Farmer survived the incident and addressed the media during a Sunday night news conference.

"We lost two great men today, but it could*ve been a lot worse. I am thankful that our government has allowed us the opportunity to protect ourselves," he said.

RELATED: 'Today our home was invaded by evil': Senior minister of West Freeway Church says

Farmer said he had planned on preaching a message about leaving a legacy. But he never got the chance.

*Today is one sermon I*ll never preach. It will go away, it was called 'Leaving a legacy' and two men today left a legacy," he said. "But the congregation is going to build on the legacy."

Two more people were treated and released at the scene after they hit their heads ducking for cover, MedStar officials said.

Longtime West Freeway Church member John Richardson was one of those who survived the shooting. He said he and his wife hit the ground and he laid on top of her to protect her.

"We have to understand that this poor man, I don't know what his mental state was, but my heart goes out to his family, because they have to live with this," he said.

"I don't have any hate for this person," Richardson continued. "I can't. We can't have hate for these people. We can't have hate for anybody that does hate for us. We have to live that life of Christ that wants us to teach and preach and be that example of his on Earth...Love everybody with the love of Christ that you can love."

RELATED: Member who survived church shooting: 'We can't have hate for anybody that does hate for us'

He selflessly said that he*s praying for the suspect*s family.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton tweeted Sunday morning that his office will assist if needed.

Gov. Greg Abbott released the following statement on the shooting later Sunday afternoon:

"Our hearts go out to the victims and families of those killed in the evil act of violence that occurred at the West Freeway Church of Christ. Places of worship are meant to be sacred, and I am grateful for the church members who acted quickly to take down the shooter and help prevent further loss of life. Cecilia and I ask all Texans to join us in praying for the White Settlement community and for all those affected by this horrible tragedy."

U.S. Attorney Erin Nealy Cox also tweeted out Sunday that details of the shooter are currently under investigation.

The shooter's motive was unknown as of late Sunday, according to FBI officials.

A new Texas law allowing worshippers to carry guns in religious locations went in to effect just months before the shooting.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.

A medical examiner's investigator takes a photo of a handgun as Sheriff's investigators investigate the scene where two men were shot to death in northeast Harris County Wednesday, March 10, 2021 in Houston. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said that a man was eating while sitting in his car in the 4500 block of Shelton, when he was approached by two men who tried to rob him. The sheriff said that the man then pulled out a gun and shot the two men trying to rob him. He then tried to flee in his car, crashing it into a ditch. He got out of his car and took the vehicle of the men trying to rob him. He drove to his father's house, who convinced him to return to the scene and cooperate with sheriff's investigators. The sheriff said investigators will forward their information to the district attorney's office, who will decide on whether charges will be filed.

Two men were killed Wednesday in a shooting that appears to be self-defense, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said.

The unidentified shooter, believed to be in his late teens, is cooperating with police. No charges have been filed.

Gonzalez said the shooter had been eating lunch in his car around 2:45 p.m. in the 4500 block of Shelton Road when two men approached him. The shooter said they tried to rob him, so he pulled out his own weapon and opened fire, striking both men.

The shooter then drove a short distance before his car "came to rest," Gonzalez said. He then jumped into the car previously occupied by the men who approached him and sped away.

The shooter later returned to the scene and met with investigators. He was not injured.

"It's very possible that we're looking at a self-defense type situation," Gonzalez said.

An afternoon shooting in Leeds left one man dead.

Chief Jim Atkinson said the shooting happened about 1:50 p.m. inside a home on Railroad Avenue. A father and son got into a physical altercation, the chief said, and the father shot the adult son multiple times.

He said the shooting appears to be a case of self-defense, but the investigation is ongoing.

It was the second shooting in Jefferson County Tuesday between a father and adult son. About two hours earlier, Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies responded Fields lane in the northwest part of the county. The wounded man was airlifted to UAB Hospital in Birmingham.

The death is Leeds first homicide this year. In all of Jefferson County, there have been 40 homicides.
