An attempted armed robbery and home invasion in Jacksonville leaves one suspect dead and the homeowner injured. Deputies are still looking for a second suspect, according to the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office.

On May 16, at 3:40 a.m., deputies responded to 12 Bailey Dr. in reference to someone having been shot. When they arrived, they found Xavier Jameel Newkirk, 28, behind his car that was parked outside his home. Newkirk had been shot twice and was transported to the U.S. Naval Hospital aboard Camp Lejeune for treatment.

In addition to Newkirk, deputies also found a dead man, later identified as Andrew James Bowden, of Kenansville, lying approximately 80 yards away from Newkirk’s home. Bowden was wearing dark clothing, latex gloves and what appeared to be a ski mask. Deputies identified him as a suspect in this case.

Newkirk told investigators he had been at a local nightclub before returning home. When he entered his home, his dog was acting agitated. Seeing his behavior, Newkirk grabbed his firearm from the house and exited the home with his dog. He was immediately confronted and shot by an unknown person.

Newkirk returned fire but was unsure if he hit anyone.

During the investigation, a pistol that belonged to Newkirk was recovered as well as a rifle.

Deputies believe the motive in this incident was armed robbery. The investigation is ongoing as deputies believe another suspect was involved.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office or Crime Stoppers.

Prosecutors Decline to Charge Man Who Shot Suspected Car Prowler in Tacoma
Stacia Glenn / The News Tribune
    Sirens
A Tacoma man who shot and critically wounded a suspected car prowler will not face criminal charges.

The shooting took place just after 11 p.m. Sunday in the 2500 block of South G Street.

A 32-year-old man called 911 and told dispatchers he'd caught someone breaking into his vehicle and confronted them. That led to him shooting the 40-year-old prowler, who fled the scene after being shot but was followed by the vehicle owner.

The prowler was taken to an area hospital, where he was listed in critical but stable condition.

The vehicle owner was arrested and booked into Pierce County Jail on suspicion of first-degree assault, but later released.

On Tuesday, Pierce County prosecutors said they will not file charges in the case.

"All indications are that the person whose car was prowled acted in self-defense after being advanced on by the other party, who was holding an object to use as a weapon," said Adam Faber, spokesman for the Prosecutor's Office.

Some witnesses said the suspected car prowler was wielding a stick. Police said they could not confirm that detail.

Donora homeowner fatally shoots man during attempted break-in
A man trying to break into a house in Washington County was fatally shot by the owner early Thursday.

Police and other emergency officials responded around 1:45 a.m. to the home of Bryan Devon Harris, 23, on 6th Street in Donora for reports of shots fired, according to county dispatch officials. Authorities said the owner Mr. Harris shot the victim and called 911.

The victim, later identified as Brandon Harrison, was pronounced dead at 3:18 a.m. after being taken by ambulance to a helicopter landing zone near Donora Elementary Center. The victim died in the ambulance while waiting to be flown to a hospital.

According to an affidavit of probable cause, Mr. Harris admitted to police that he hid the firearm he used to shoot Mr. Harrison under a mattress in his bedroom and hid the expended shell casings in a shoe in the homes entryway before he called police.

After they searched the home, police found three firearms, multiple rounds of ammunition and a plastic container holding marijuana, packaging materials and 1000 packets containing suspected heroin, the affidavit said.

As a result of their findings, police have charged Mr. Harris with criminal homicide, tampering with evidence and drug charges.

Mr. Harris*s preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Dec. 16.

Great Bend homeowner shoots suspect during attempted burglary

GREAT BEND, Kan. (KAKE) - An attempted burglary in Great Bend left the suspect with a gunshot to the face after being confronted by the homeowner, police say.

On Saturday Aug. 8, Great Bend police responded to a burglary in progress at a residence in the 1300 block of Jefferson St.

Officers were told a man had entered into the home and a disturbance had taken place between the suspect and homeowners.

When officers arrived they located and identified the suspect as 27-year-old Zachary Horyna with a gun shot wound to the face.

Horyna was restrained and treated from his injures by Great Bend EMS. Horyna was transported to KU Med Great Bend where he was then flown to a Wichita hospital where he is reported to be in stable condition.

After a preliminary investigation, officers believe Horyna entered the residence and when the homeowners confronted him, he began to physically assault them. A disturbance followed and officers believe this is when the homeowner shot Horyna. The homeowners were treated for their injuries on the scene.

Neighbor rescues Pottstown woman attacked by own dogs
POTTSTOWN, Pa. * A dramatic rescue unfolded in Pottstown Tuesday after a man rescued a woman from her own dogs.

Neighbors on Maplewood Drive say the three dogs that live at the house have attacked their owner before * but never like this.

"She was crying out the whole time, 'Please help me, stop, please help!'" said Fred Davison. "I grabbed my firearm and I tried to get into the house a couple different ways and couldn't, so I shot out the front door and unlocked it and was able to get in."

That's when Davison says he had no choice but to shoot one of the dogs in order to get close to the other dog that was violently attacking the woman, who was bleeding very badly.

"It was very bad in there," Davison said. "It looked like a crime scene in there."

He added, "I kept my weapon on the dog to make sure it didn't get a second wind and come back after her, and she listened, she stayed down until the ambulance got here and the police got here."

When the police arrived, they found two of the dogs dead and animal control had to tranquilize the third. They also found 12 puppies.

"A puppy came out and I held on to that puppy because of broken glass on the ground and I just held onto that puppy until animal control could take it," said neighbor Denise Lawrence.

No word yet on what will happen to the third dog or those 12 puppies but one police officer did say he knows one thing: Fred Davison absolutely saved the woman's life.

"I just think that I was just doing what anybody would do," said Davison. "I was fortunate to be in the right place at the right time."

The woman remains in the hospital.

Ex-employee stabs 2 barbers in Riverside before victim shoots him to death
    Brian RokosMay 22, 2021 at 5:24 p.m.
Firefighters take a man to an ambulance after a man entered Carlos Barber Shop on La Sierra Avenue in Riverside on May 21, 2021, stabbed two people and was shot by one of his victims, police say. The man who was shot died at a hospital. (Loudlabs News)

An ex-employee of a Riverside barbershop stabbed two former co-workers before being shot to death by one of his victims on Friday evening, May 21, the Riverside Police Department said.

The victims suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening, Officer Ryan Railsback, a department spokesman, said Saturday.

*Our barbers are okay and safe, just healing today,* read a sign posted Saturday on the front of Carlos Barber Shop at 3470 La Sierra Ave.

The Riverside County Coroner*s Office and Railsback identified the assailant as Joseph Anthony Jimenez, 33, of Riverside. Railsback said Saturday that Jimenez is a former barbershop employee.

The State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology website says Jimenez was issued a license on Feb. 28, 2018, that was still active at the time of his death.

Customers arriving at the shop for a haircut Saturday were surprised to see that it was closed, unaware of the attack the night before. One motorist snapped a photo of the shop using his cell phone as he rolled by. A window that had been pierced by a bullet was boarded up.

The sign also said that employees planned to reopen on Sunday. A manager at the Carlos Barber Shop on Van Buren Boulevard, where customers were lined up out the door, declined to comment on the attack.

Railsback said that about 6:40 p.m., a man entered the shop and started an altercation. He then stabbed one man, and when a second man intervened, he was stabbed as well.

The second victim then got a gun and fired at the attacker.

*The suspect collapsed right outside the business,* Railsback said.

Jimenez was taken to Riverside Community Hospital, where he died at 7:27 p.m., the coroner said.

Detectives have not determined a motive for the attack, Railsback said. Detectives considered the shooting to be self-defense, although the District Attorney*s Office will have the final say on whether charges are filed against the shooter.
