Prosecutor: Fatal Portage shooting was self-defense
    Amy Lavalley
Porter County Prosecutor Gary Germann said in a statement Tuesday that he is not filing criminal charges in a shooting and stabbing last month in Portage, calling the shooting death of one of the participants an act of self-defense.

Portage police were called around 7:51 p.m. on March 17 to the 2500 block of Dombey Road after being notified by a 15-year-old boy that he had been shot, police said then. Neighbors also called after hearing multiple gunshots. They also received a call from a 37-year-old man who said he had been stabbed.

Responding officers found Jamie Vincent, 35, of that address, deceased at the front edge of a driveway, and the boy, a family member, with a gunshot wound to his right hand. The 37-year-old was standing outside of his truck, parked in front of the residence, and a passerby who had stopped to check on Vincent also was there.

The teen and the 37-year-old sustained serious injuries and were transported separately to Methodist Hospital Northlake in Gary.

Portage Police Chief Troy Williams at the time said it was “an isolated incident involving subjects who knew each other” and that it was precipitated by an outstanding debt.

Vincent died from multiple gunshot wounds, Germann said.

Germann said that after reviewing all of the police reports and a conference with Portage Detective Kurt Biggs, who led the investigation, he determined that during an altercation between Vincent and the second party, the second party suffered a potentially fatal stab wound.

“The second party then tragically shot Mr. Vincent in self-defense. In the absence of prompt medical attention, the second party may have themselves died because of the severity of the stab wound,” Germann said. “As a result, no criminal charges will be filed in this case.”

Mire family fights off half-naked intruder

A mire family is safe tonight after being caught in the middle of a man running away from police.

Emanuel Sorcia is accused of leading police on a high speed chase on the Mire Highway through Mire and toward Church Point, traveling more than 100 mph according to officials.

Duson Police say they were trying to pull him over, after spotting him driving recklessly.

KATC was able to obtain police dashcam video of the chase where you can see the driver weaving through traffic and passing an 18-wheeler.

The chase ended in a crash near LA-95 and LA-1098, where police were able to find the passenger. He was identified as Thomas Murphy, 29, of Eunice. He was wanted on a failure to appear warrant on charges of bank fraud in Acadia Parish, police say.

But Sorcia, the driver, took a detour before being apprehended by police.

“The thing is we didn’t know what to do, we didn’t know what the right thing was, it all happened so fast,” said Leslie Barthe. She was at her son’s house watching TV with family, when she said Sorcia barged into the home, half-naked and demanded to use their phone.

“He knocked on the door, he said ‘it’s me’ and then came in the house and he was in nothing but half boxers covering his junk and his junk was pretty much out,” said Kristen Toney, who lives in the home and also saw everything.

The family said the intruder even told them he was running away from police.

So they called 911 and took matters into their own hands by threatening the intruder with a gun.

“I was terrified and yes guns were pulled out, nothing was shot, no nothing, but he still wasn’t scared,” said Sarah Cormier, who was at the home with her baby. “My brother was saying leave because he wouldn’t leave the house. My uncle had to punch him in order to get him out of the door way and my brother, whenever he closed the door and locked it, [the man] kept on banging on the door and trying to get in.”

Duson Police Chief Kip Judice credits the family for handling the situation the way they did.

“A half-naked man, a mostly naked man, comes into a house in a rural area at that time of night, I think it’s not too hard to go in front of a grand jury and say ‘I feared for myself or for my family.’ But fortunately quick actions by those residents in the Mire area resulted in us capturing him really quickly,” said Chief Judice.

Sorcia was caught and arrested at Mire Elementary. He was booked into the Acadia Parish Jail for aggravated flight from an officer, hit and run driving and unauthorized entry into inhabited dwelling.

“When it was all said and done and things were all over with last night, that’s when you sit down and you think what if this happened and what if that happened? And I’m so grateful it didn’t happen in that way. I’m glad he ran, I’m glad he left, I’m glad it’s over with,” said Barthe.

WATCH: Scuffle With McDonald’s Security Guard Ends With Gun Drawn, No Shots Fired

Chicago (CBS) — A fight between two men and a security guard outside a Gold Coast McDonald’s ended with a gun drawn, but no shots fired.

It was two against one as the security guard got smashed into a brick wall. His hat goes flying, as do fists towards his head.

During the struggle, it appears a can of pepper spray drops. One of the attackers picks it up and points it at the security guard. That’s when the security guard pulls out a gun. He doesn’t shoot, but it sends his attackers off.

“He was well within his rights. He was being attacked,” John Ivy said.

“You got to put yourself in his shoes. He’s defending himself. He feels threatened,” McDonald’s customer A.J. Jones said. “They could have killed that man.”

It’s unclear what led up to the scuffle outside the McDonald’s at State and Chicago, just steps from the Red Line.

“I ain’t never seen him [the security guard] get into it with nobody else. They had to have been provoking him,” Jones said.

There was a noticeable police presence in the area Monday, parked in front of the McDonald’s, and patrolling on foot and on bikes.

Police have been called to the Chicago and State McDonald’s 35 times in the past 30 days — 23 disturbances, nine batteries, and three assaults.

Chicago police have no record of the incident, so it appears no one called 911.

The security company declined to comment, and McDonald’s did not return CBS 2’s call.

Man kills suspected robber during sale of PlayStation in north Houston, police say
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Houston police say a man who was trying to buy a PlayStation shot and killed a person he was meeting up with for the sale.

According to police, the buyer used an online selling app called "Let Go" to arrange the deal.

Police say a 46-year-old man was waiting in his car in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Greens Parkway around 10 p.m. Tuesday.

He told investigators that a man wearing a mask walked up and pointed a rifle at him, so he pulled out his own gun and started shooting because he thought he was going to get robbed.

The suspect was shot and killed.

The buyer was a licensed concealed carry holder. The district attorney will decide on potential charges.

Son Shoots, Kills Home Invasion Suspect Who Allegedly Pistol-Whipped Father

A man shot and killed a home invasion suspect after that suspect and two others allegedly pistol-whipped his father to gain entry to the house.
KTRK reports that the incident occurred on Quail Meadow Drive in Houston, Texas, where the father arrived home and exited his vehicle, only to be attacked by three suspects. The suspects then entered the home while the father’s two daughters took refuge inside a closet.

The daughters were able to press an alarm button, thereby alerting police.

According to WCNC, the son and mother arrived at the home during the alleged invasion, and the son quickly figured out something was awry. He grabbed his pistol and opened fire as the suspects fled the house. One of his rounds struck one suspect in the head, killing him. The other two suspects allegedly stole the father’s vehicle, making their escape.

Police indicate that the suspect the son killed was armed with a handgun.

Man dies after being shot in Sioux City home invasion
April 9, 2019 By Radio Iowa Contributor
Sioux City police say a man who was shot in what appears to be a home invasion Tuesday morning has died.

Detective John Sanders says they were first called on the report of a disturbance at the home and shots were fired 10 minutes later. “A subject at this location had broken out a window on the second floor of the residence and jumped off the porch of this residence. He had left the residence prior to officers arrival,” according to Sanders.

Sanders says the person who went through the window was apparently fleeing from the person living in the home. “A resident of this address stated that he came into the residence and was breaking things in the kitchen area, and then started to assault the homeowner,” Sanders says. “The resident retrieved a weapon during the struggle with the supect, and a shot was fired during the struggle. The suspect was shot and was transported to Mercy Medical Center, where he subsequently died.”

Sanders says they are still trying to learn more about what happened.”At this time there is no evidence that these individuals knew each other or had any association. We do not know the motive for the burglary or the assualt at this time,” Sanders says. He says the person who lived in the home called 9-1-1 after firing the shot and that person was also treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The names of the two people have not been released, and no charges have been filed as the investigation continues.

COURTLAND HOME INVASION LED TO DEADLY SHOOTING

UPDATE: (7:20 p.m.) The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency says 53-year-old Phil Orr of Courtland was shot by a homeowner after forcibly entering a residence and firing at the homeowner.

Officials say the homeowner was not injured, and Orr was pronounced dead at the scene. Courtland Police Chief Steven Terry requested the Alabama State Bureau of Investigation assist in the investigation.

The homeowner and Orr were cousins.

WAAY 31 spoke with a family member who says he's feeling torn. He said both Orr and the homeowner were his first cousins. He didn't want to talk to on camera but said he and the rest of the family are hurting, because they have someone involved on both sides.

    ----------

According to the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office, on Tuesday around 2:40 p.m., a shooting was reported at Water Street in Courtland, right behind the town's police and fire departments.

The sheriff's office says it was called by Courtland police to investigate the shooting death of an adult male. During an initial investigation, the sheriff's office says it was determined a person involved in the shooting is the relative of someone who works for the sheriff’s office.
