Youngster carry on private property located in the sticks
I was asked a question today from a guy who lives on 150 acres. He has a 15 year old who he wants to carry a weapon when they go out on the property together. Unfortunately, they have to patrol frequently despite having posted property. Folks have a tendency to hunt, swipe long-range steel targets, and even $10k worth of ginseng root.
The question is if, only on their private property, the 15 year old can carry a handgun, either OC or CC?
And what about a slung AR for the youngster?
I grew up on a farm and was carrying around the property when I was 15, but those were different times.
Any advice is appreciated. I don't want either of them to get in trouble.Ragged Hole Manufacturer

I think a handgun is a no go in the situation you posted. There does seem to be some wiggle room but I don't think I would chance it where I live. Some people just plain suck.

The scenario makes me nervous.
In my mind, the guy is asking his 15 yo to be a security guard, albeit on his own property. Nothing wrong with that in itself, but I feel that if you arm that 15 yo, it takes it to a whole nother level.
Now I am sure that he is the most responsible, mature, right-minded 15 yo that God ever put on Earth, but with my experience with teens is that they would be over their heads when it comes to life or death, shoot or no shoot firearms situations.

Common sense says "no". They simply lack the maturity to wield life or death.

Regardless of legalities, my instinct is that if they patrol together, let the adult have the firearm and let the kid have the binoculars and a police-band portable 2-way radio. People who steal $10K of ginseng root may be professional criminals; stay well clear of them.

How do they know thast $10,000 worth of ginseng was stolen? Did they previously survey their property for ginseng, identify all the growing ginseng and determine the size and value of the roots growing under each plant? Was a poacher apprehended with $10,000 of ginseng in their possession?
Just curious.

I am not a lawyer but I think the son can carry a long gun but not a handgun. I come to this conclusion after reading the appropriate sections of the crimes code. I revisited it for this thread after checking it out for my own reasons a couple years ago.
