Places you miss
I miss the local dump outside my boyhood town, what a great place, during daylight it was loaded with crows to shoot and at night plenty of rats, back then even troopers would stop by and shoot at the rats, some times with their revolvers or borrow a .22 off us.
On thursday the A&P brought the day old bread and cakes an just opened the doors to the truck an the people there cleaned it out, old folks first, then Mom's then kids, when the truck was coming you would hear someone shout "the bread man is coming".
Also anything worth having was by custom left by the front of the dump instead of throwing it on the pile to be burried, it really was a wonderful place, as funny as it sounds.
May be the rich folks didn't know it but we did.

i remember doing that back in VA., but we didn't have a bread man, and although the cops didn't join in with us, they didn't bother us either, the dump is still there, but the rules are alot stricter than they used to be......

Wow, that brought back memories! We went to the Weisenberg Twp. dump and shot stuff all the time. Shot my first pheasant there, I think I was 6 or 7, did it with a Red Ryder bb gun, no shit , I swear. Later, they put an attendant there to make sure you were a Twp. resident. He did not bat an eye about shooting stuff.
Man, thanks for the re-memory, I am going to tell my kids about the old dump tonight at dinner, I had forgotten about that growing up.
Be safe.

This was 1950s Tuckerton NJ and even then wasn't legal but no one cared as long as you stuck to crow and rats, hard to believe that NJ was once a nice place. Even the game warden didn't view shooting rats as a hunting violation [no rifles in NJ for hunting at that time].

Re: Places you miss
Nice, childhood memories!
I guess mine would be the neighborhood I grew up in in Akron, Ohio. I was one of those amazing neighborhoods where everyone knew everyone, tons of kids and thing to do.
Me and my friends used to go three blocks down to "the woods", it was a section of vacant woods between the AC & Y and the B & O railroads and then below the B & O was more woods that lead down to the Cuyahoga river. There was tons to do, we built forts and tunnels and tree houses. We ran "missions" with our BB guns .. it was our little world. When it was real hot we went down to the river for a swim and when we needed money we went down to the police firing range (right across the river) and we dug lead out of the backstops ... my dad would pick us up with our buckets of lead and then sell it for us.
Damn, now I REALLY miss those days, a simpler time when kids could really be kids.

It's kind of sad but I cannot think of anywhere I miss. I grew up in PA, lived in San Diego, Connecticut, New York, and Texas before moving back to PA. At this point, I believe I would be happiest in a remote area of the Pacific Northwest where I could have lots of land with lots of animals, 4 wheelers, and a stream nearby to do some fishing.. and of course, I need a firing range.

Not really a place, but I miss Saturday Morning Cartoons! Once Nick and Cartoon Network came out, that was the end of Sat Morn Cartoons! Kids today have no understanding of anticipation! The can watch cartoons any hour of the day...
As far as places I miss, I'd have to say the Ship Hotel in Bedford is a great loss! I remember stopping there everytime we passed it on road trips when I was little. I recently stopped there with my kids to show them the view, but all that was left was a few concrete blocks and a couple water pipes sticking outta the ground...

The woods of Maine in the fall during bear season. I used to work for a hunting outfitter for 6-8 weeks every yr. I loved doing it. Sometimes you are 30-40 miles form the nearest house. A lot of good times with a lot of good people.

I miss growing up in the towns of New Freedom and Shrewsbury way back before the Maryland infestation. Back then you either lived in town, or on a farm/boonies. You could roam the area at will and just be a kid with no worries about being a victim of crime. Everybody knew everybody back then and looked out for each other. I guess now its just town and a bunch of giant housing projects.
