Thoughts on a choice between the subcompact 9mm's based on a 1911?

My wife saw a Kimber Ultra CDP II in 9mm the other day and became quite enamored with it (faster than she did when she met me even! ).

With that in mind I know of the Kimber, Springfield EMP, and STI Escort all available in this generally similiar subcompact 1911 and using the 9mm caliber.

There is also Para's model for concealed carry but it is in that light double action trigger which neither of us has ever tried.

So am I missing on any makes?

Does anyone have any of the above that would be willing to let her try?

Any opinions on the pros and cons of the different brands?

They also make a "slim" 9mm thats SAO

I looked and looked and looked into these recently, and the EMP's have a bad rep. real bad. The 1911 platform just doesnt work too well in these itsy bitsys. If I would trust anyone to get it running that small it would be STI.

I decided to go not that small, but compact

STI has the most experience making non .45 ACP 1911's run in that group.

Generally, in a 1911 single stack .45's run slightly better than double stack .45's....

..but, with 9mm and .40 that dynamic is reversed. So while I voted for the Escort....my true vote goes to the VIP. It's the perfect carry 1911.

The EMP...it was completely designed around the 9mm round, it's not a .45 acp gun that's worked over to fire 9mm. Also, it comes with night sights and ambi safety. Lifetime warranty and excellent customer service. I think you get more for your money in the EMP considering they're both around $1,000.

I just don't care for a 1911 as a carry gun. I have one,a Colt,but I don't carry it. IMO the only 1911 that I would think of packing would be one or two of Para's models. For me Glocks or XDs just seem to carry better.

When you say they carry better, what do you mean? Safety? Concealability?

Pretty sure he was meaning the weight part, I know my Ruger P345 weighs lots less than my Detonics Combat Master, and the Taurus I usually CC is even less than that, with the same 6+1

S&W also makes a 9mm 1911 there are a few others but can't remember right offhand, Kimber makes the most different ones I believe, the Aegis (?) lne is really sweet looking

while i like my 1911 Officers I have to say, for carry I would make a different choice. My wife's Kahr carries a LOT better then my 1911 due to weight, its also DAO. The hammer and beavertail can really be annoying depending on how you carry and your size.

Also the treatment that goes on the Glock's and XD's to prevent rust is great.

See if you can find a Para-LDA to try the trigger. We have a full size LDA 18-9 it is a sweet trigger with the extra safetys of the 1911. There is no problem leaving the thumb safety off as the grip safety is still working also there is more travel to the trigger.

I voted for the SA EMP. However, I do not rank the compact 1911's up with their larger brothers in terms of reliability. The reviews I have read were 50/50 as far as reliability and ability to digest many ammunition types.
