500 Special, it's shorter than the regular 1.625 inch of 500 mag brass and hard to find as hen's teeth.

Not really much point for the .500 special if you reload. You can load your own reduced loads (with the right powder) using standard easier to find .500 mag brass and not have to deal with the fouling ring and gas cutting of the chamber which can be a PITA when you want to shoot standard .500 mag ammo. Only brass I know of is what Corbon uses/used in their ammo, which Corbon probably special orders from starline in large quantities.

A reduced load using Unique is great if you reload. Use it in standard brass. I've been shooting them for a few years now.

But if he has to shoot someone, it sounds better if it was with a 500 Special instead of an overkill 500 Magnum.

Thanks to all. I'm giving up. I was looking for it more for the novelty value than anything else. dkf raises good, valid points. DucatiRon, I have used the reduced loads with Unique, and it does shoot great, but seems kind of dirty. IMR 4227 stinks up the place, smells like ammonia. Titegroup is too hard on my cases. W296/H110 and LiL Gun are my favorites. Tmygun, I really, really hope I never have to draw down on anyone with this gun, which I shoot for enjoyment and to support my enjoyment of reloading ammo. Just so you all know, I did find a picture and they actually do (or did) exist, from COR-BON as dkf states: http://www.ammo-one.com/500SmithWessomSpecial.html

On an unrelated note, from Missouri, I'd like to say heartfelt thanks to the great state of Pennsylvania for doing your part to help steer our nation forward and preserve our right to defend ourselves.

Try some Trail Boss powder. Here is a thread on TB and the .500 http://castboolits.gunloads.com/show...h-small-recoil

For .44mag I usually use HS-6 or Power Pistol for reduced loads, it burns pretty clean.
