    Question 1911 function question

I'm not sure if I caught a problem, or if it's always like this.

Take a 1911, and dry fire it. Now hold the trigger back, and try to thumb-cock the hammer - don't rack the slide. Does the hammer catch on the sear, or does it just try to fall back on the firing pin stop?

My RIA doesn't, but, to be honest, I don't fully understand what the disconnector does, beyond keeping the hammer from falling when the trigger is held back and the slide is out of battery.

The hammer should catch first on the half-cock shelf, then the cocked shelf of the sear, when pulled back by the thumb.

For the disco, read this; http://forum.m1911.org/showthread.ph...e-Disconnector

To EDIT: did you disassemble your 1911 and forget the disco?

    Check out this thread: http://forum.pafoa.org/showthread.php?t=312037

The link in post #3 is a rather detailed explanation of 1911 operation.

Nope. The disconnector is definitely in there.

    Ahh. Okay.

Yes , that is how it should work. Unless the slide cycles , the sear is held and hammer will fall. The cycling of the slide depresses the disconnector , which disconnects the sear from the trigger , so the sear holds the hammer back for the next round.
