Default What grain bullet to use

Had a question. I recently picked up a Weatherby Vanguard Deluxe rifle in 30-06. The plan is to hunt whitetail with it. The barrel is 24 inches long and has a 1 in 10 twist. What grain bullet should I use? I know it is a balancing act between grain weight and rifle twist and what you are going to be shooting. You want a bullet heavy enough to take down what you are shooting at but sometimes a certain bullet may be to heavy or to light for the rate of twist causing key holing. So if you have a similar length barrel with a similar twist rate what do you use?

That is standard rifling for the "06". For Whitetails, any standard grain "06" bullet is deadly. You can accurately shoot 180 to 220 grain with that rifle and not worry about not having enough knock down energy for deer. (Unless your shooting ridiculous long range distances).

A 150g bullet of your choice will do just fine. Don't over think it.

I've always used 165 grain Remingtons. I used 150 grain hornady American Whitetail in 308 last year and was extremely happy with the performance. I plan on giving the same ammo a try in my .30-06 this year. The .30-06 produces enough energy that 150s will work fine on deer and black bear.

150s or 165s will do the job nicely. Find one that shots well and have it.

Excellent choice! My go to bullet for my '06 has been the 165. Nice balance between power and accuracy. A bit more oomph than 150 and does not push you around like 180. Will do a good job on any game in PA and also for target. If I take my time I get sub MOA out of my old Savage.

Since I usually hunt in the thick stuff I like a 180gr round nose.

you literally cannot choose wrong with that caliber and that animal assuming it is a bullet designed to expand, you sight the gun in and you make a good shot in the vitals.

i used to use 180 (for no good reason) but switched to 165 because of the trajectory over my likely hunting distances.

A 10 twist is still a throw back to the old days Of the 220 gr fmj rn bullet . Your rifle will shoot anything from 80 gr pistol bullets and up just fine as others have said don't over think things for deer 150-180 will work just fine .
