    Default Scope for AR... Suggestions.

I am looking for some suggestions for a good scope for my Bushmaster A3. I currently have a cheap red dot scope on it, but the dot is not cutting it. I would really like to get alot more accuracy from my AR, both at long range and up close. I want a scope that I can shoot at least 200yds or further. I would like any suggestions or input that you guys may have.

    Thanks.

It's a red dot scope that can go 1x-3x. I had one on my AR in AZ for shooting 3 gun matches. I was hitting targets at 300yds no problem.

Decisions, decisions. Actually there are many great choices for AR scopes. The most deciding factor would be price. What's your budget?

The hot set up these days is a low power variable in the 1x - 5x power range. The problem is the *good ones* are extraordinarily expensive.

The S&B Short Dot is one such example.

You have to be careful about eye relief when mounting a conventional optic on the AR platform. Make sure you do your homework in that regard.

Well my budget is rather small, I would like to keep below $200. I know its hard to find a good scope for that amount, buts thats I'm getting suggestions from you guys, so keep them coming.

I have an Aimpoint clone on the way. I think it was around $70 shipped. I know everybody says that optics will cost as much or more than the gun it's mounted on but I have a hard time justifying it at this point. I'll let you know how mine works once it gets here.

    Leupold CQT is the suck.
Battery life is awful, and they dont have the lifetime warranty of the other leupold lines.
    plus, its heavy.

do you have a flattop, or a carry handle upper?

lots of stuff out there magnified, and unmagnified, etc.

if you buy a reddot type, get the SMALLEST dot possible, 2 MOA or smaller, dont care for them, but a Eotech may do ya.

for magnified, get a mildot, or rangefinding reticle....thin duplex crosshairs.

a 4x seems fine to 300yds, anything farther I'd want to go to a 3-9x variable power scope.

lots of fairly ok low priced optics out there, better to save up a little more for something later tho.

I have something similar to this that seems pretty sturdy...at least so far, its cheap crap, and I know it, but if its stupid, and it works...

I'm waiting for a better scope to come back from repair however, and it will be replaced.

I already have an Aimpoint clone on my AR and it sucks. Also my AR is a flat top with the removable carry handle.

Under $200 I can't think of a finer scope than the Bushnell Elite 3200 fixed 10x scope. They can be had for around $150 if you look around, have a lifetime warranty, pretty decent glass, mil-dots and target turrets. I have one on a DPMS 308 that works fabulous and side by side compares very favorably to the 10x Super Sniper (another great scope, about $299). Tru Glo also offers a 2x red dot in that price range that looks very interesting in concept but I don't know anything (good or bad) about it.

i wouldn't want any magnification on a gun that was made for house clearing, close range work and some extended distances. I'd go with an EOtech or aimpoint. Trijicon also makes a reflex which isn't bad. You could find a decent eotech for 300$. I think the eotech is the best possible optic for the AR available today.
