Default Why isn't an SSI number needed for background checks?

I noticed that when filling out the form. Seems like it would be easy to have cases of mistaken identity without one. However, I guess the odds of someone having the same name and birth date are slim.

I think I already submit enough of my personal information as it is each time I purchase a firearm.

When I purchased my 1st firearm I left my SSN off the form when NJ NICS came back they told the FFL that there was a discrepancy with my name with another person who had a different B-day I provided my SSN and was approved right then and there. Only had that issue once in NJ and never again after that.

Your SSN used to be required. A few years back that was changed making it optional. I leave it off now. Hasn't caused me any issues.
I called to check my ZIP CODE!....DY-NO-MITE!!!

I left mine off. Only bought one gun so far. Just thought more info would have been needed.

I believe it was made optional to prevent identity theft.

Who has the right to request your SSN? Federal law mandates that state Departments of Motor Vehicles, tax authorities, welfare offices, and other governmental agencies request your SS number as proof that you are who you claim to be. However, the Privacy Act of 1974 requires that government agencies at the local, state, and federal level disclose to each person whether submitting your Social Security number is required, details on the use of this information, and what law or authority requires its use.
Please note that this Act stipulates that no one can deny you a government service or benefit for failing to provide your SSN unless federal law specifically requires it. (http://www.identityhawk.com/Who-Can-...ecurity-Number)

They can ask, but they can't require (yes, there is a difference).

The PICS system returns only the last 4 digits of the SSN to the dealer.

You need only put down the last 4 digits on the forms.

In fact, what is returned to the FFL after keying in the buyer's DL number is:

"The information on the buyer is:

    - The last four digits of the social security are _____.
    - last name is (spelled out).
    - date of birth is ________.

If fhe information is correct, please press 1."
