Re: New Family Member!
Neat, I owned a few snakes when I was a kid, haven't owned one since (unless you count the ones in the back yard and in our stone wall) ... but very cool indeed!!

Kill it, kill it, kill it. I thought this was gonna be a pic of anew baby, not the legless version of the fallen angel.

You big baby it's just a snake.

Re: New Family Member!
She's beautiful! How old and where did you get her? My son's suggestion for a name is Lucille. That's what he named his female. (reps to the first who pm's me with the correct answer as to why he chose that name). Unfortunately she died recently. My son also had a male ball python named Monty. He was doing well, very sociable, eating well, growing and shedding, but then one day my son went to get him and he was dead. It was sad because of all the odd pets we had, the ball pythons were the easiest to warm up to. They were easy to like because they were gentle, and didn't have a snakey smell and weren't slimey, which I guess what makes ball pythons more desireable than other snakes as pets, and they never attempted to nip or strike. They're just cool to have hanging around your neck and arm while kicking back watching a movie.
Lucille was just a gentle as Monty and started out a great eater, but then stopped. We had a pro come and check out the set up to make sure the temp was good, lighting appropriate, heating pad properly positioned, but Lucille just stopped eating. We consulted specialists from all around who all had their own theories, but the most logical explaination we got was that Lucille didn't feel secure in her new home and woudn't risk eating because snakes slow down after a good hearty mousicle and a nervous one doesn't want to get sluggish. so basically, she starved herself to death.
I'm definitely getting him another one, but this time I'd like to find a vet who might have some tips or thoughts about why the first two died and maybe talk to whoever sold you yours if you think they know their stuff.
As creepy as many people think a pet snake might be, I would take a ball python anyday over some nippy little rodent like a hamster or gerbil that just wants to bite you, run away and crawl back into ball until the lights go out, when it suddenly turns into circus time with such great acts as chewing through water bottles, escape attempts by scratching through the metal cage bottom and the evenings highlight, tossing every flek of betting, along with all their little jelly beans they've worked so hard to make all day, out of the cage.Last edited by str8shooter; August 18th, 2008 at 09:57 AM.
You are a straight white man. You don't get to be the victim, sweetie.

I had a ball python for 12 years. She was great, my kids loved holding her. Her name was Fluffy.

Re: New Family Member!
I used to have two Ball Pythons ... The male was Sasha and the female was Mazi.
I had Sasha for a while, he was a great snake. Although, every year from about October to March he would stop eating. It's hard to fatten up a snake when they don't eat for half the year. It sucked because he would only eat live mice (3 or 4) and I would have to figure out the best way to "dispose" of them when he decide to stop eating for the breeding season.
Mazi ... now she was a different story. She was wild caught and pretty cranky. She never took a strike at us, but she would puff up and hiss all the time. I ended up giving her away after a few months to someone else, because she wouldn't eat. I tried every trick in the book.
To anyone looking or planning on buying a snake ... please, please try to find one that is captive breed. You will have such a better chance of getting a good snake than a wild caught/breed one.
I might try and find some old pictures.
