Finally shot 1,000 yards
Been wanting to reach out there for a while, but I finally had the opportunity at a buddy's coal property. We went to his 450 yard range for me to qualify at 300 & 450. Ding, ding. Put one shot on each using my el-cheapo Ruger American (260 Rem) in a MDT LSS chassis & SWFA 10x. My buddies had their hunting rifles (30-06 & 300 win mag) & couldn't connect at 450 due to relying on Kentucky windage.
We moved on to the 1,000 yard spot. They had a large 8' target board with a 8.5"x11" piece of cardboard in the middle. My first shot was 12" from dead center on the cardboard. 2nd was a few inches to the side of that. I kept trying to chase the holes around using the turrets, but I think I did pretty well for my first time at 1,000. Next time I go out, I will leave my windage knob at 0 & use the reticle for hold off instead. It was really eye opening how much the wind pushes you around at that distance! I definitely need practice reading mirage & the wind socks.
There were some old timers there who shoot at the 1,000 yard club up in Williamsport. They were saying we needed to shoot faster to avoid the wind changes. Apparently, the record 1,000 yard group at that club is under 3" for 10 shots!

Re: Finally shot 1,000 yards
They have a safe spot down below the target for a person to sit & they walkie talkie back to the shooting position. I was speaking to one of the older gents who's 85 & still building rifles! He just got one of the cameras that transmit video through a wireless connection, but he needs help getting it set up as he's not a computer sort of person. I'll have to see if I can go back out there with him sometime. He seriously knows his stuff!

Woohoo!!! Nice job. Welcome to the club, you can now enter. I still have to wait outside.
Let's not forget there are still species of tropical penguins living in the Galapagos.

Haha, I waited outside the club for a while as well.
I can see how this transforms into an obsession though. They also had a 20" gong there. First 2 shots were dead on, then I missed the next 2 - pretty humbling. Just when I thought I was getting the hang of it...

Re: Finally shot 1,000 yards
It would have been much more difficult to reach 1,000 yards with a 308 that is for sure.
Wind is tough and it's constantly changing...that is where reticles like the Horus really helps. It was designed for unknown distances, but it helps the person not have to dial for windage changes.
