I typically bought a $100 gift certificate for the cultural trust as a Christmas present every year for a relative. I guess I'll have to find something else for her.

So I spoke to my rep.

She said there will be 2 uniformed police officers outside, which is up from 1.

She also said there's more inside security staff.

Eventually there will be a members only line. I didn't ask her if it would be unmonitored but I am hoping.

I wonder how only two officers are going to manage escorting everyone to their vehicles?

Actually, I know the answer... Oh, if only people could accept personal responsibility for their safety. What a wonderful would it could be.

I agree and it's a risk I have to take to keep going there.
I have reserved parking at the garage next door so I think the risk is minimal. We do go to dinner first, right around the cultural district, so I can carry, then go back to vehicle before show.

My wife and I have gone down to the “cultural district” on some occasions over the last 10 years or so. I showed her this and she said “another thing to cross off the list”. We both carry, 24/7/365 – have done so for 30+ years.

Three reasons why we won’t go anymore:
    1. We don’t go to gun free zones – they are target zones. Not only inside, but the assembly of people standing around in front of the place waiting to get in… again, targets for anyone with a gun, bomb, or even a CAR!

    2. You are a target for any thief/mugger/robber/rapist/ etc… as you leave, any d-bag worth his salt can target people leaving these places, knowing that these people are unarmed will make things easier. The fact that numerous ladies of “prominence” go to these events in pairs (since hubby is staying home to watch the local sporting event of his choice) – sporting their finery, targets aplenty!

It’s nice to be able to park next to the event… but as we all know, that isn’t always possible. I have no desire to walk around any downtown area at night unarmed…

    3. Why in F---s sake, would we want to give our $ to an organization/company/event etc… that wants to prohibit us from exercising our 2nd Amendment Rights?

I understand for some this really sucks, I no longer go to baseball games for the same reason, and for me baseball games was the one thing that I truly enjoyed.

    Just my take.

My take is I'm not going to give up everything I enjoy because of stuff like this. Life is too short.

And, statistically, the risk of going to a show occasionally unarmed is the same as going armed.

    To each their own though.

I haven't decided for sure yet, but I am definitely leaning in this direction.

I've been buying my wife tickets to these events for years as a Christmas present, guess I'll have to figure out something else.

So day one was a cluster.

First-time use of metal detectors briefly delays Byham show
    SHELLY BRADBURY

As lines stretched a half-block down the sidewalk from Byham Theater Saturday night, an ambulance pulled up out front, casting pale red and white lights over the growing crowd.

Some at the end of the line wondered if the ambulance was the cause of the longer-than-usual wait to get into the theater — but it was there for an unrelated call. Actually, the theater’s new metal detectors were to blame.

Saturday marked the first time guests at the 1,300-seat venue had to pass through metal detectors at the entrance of the theater as part of a general beefing up of security that’s been happening across the industry.

And although patrons had been warned to arrive at least 45 minutes early in order to accommodate the new security procedures, most arrived at quarter till 8 p.m. for the top-of-the-hour performance, and lines burgeoned outside for about a half-hour.

The start of Deborah Colker Dance’s “Cao sem Plumas,” was pushed back a few minutes to ensure no one missed the start of the show, said Kevin Wilkes, chief security officer.

“I’d say 80 to 90 percent of our guests arrived in the last 20 minutes,” Mr. Wilkes said, “and that created a little bit of a backlog. But other than that, I thought it went relatively well for our first night.”

The lines had cleared by 8:15 p.m. Mr. Wilkes said he had not received many complaints. Most people, he said, were in good spirits as they passed through the metal detectors.

“I think they realize that in a post 9/11 world, this is the way of the world,” he said.

Outside and at the back of the line, Bill Deichler, of Canonsburg, said the wait was worth the extra level of security.

“If it makes us safer, it’s for the best,” he said. “Waiting a little while is all right.”

Teresa Brosenitsch, of Squirrel Hill, had similar thoughts.

“I’ve never felt unsafe going to a show,” she said. “But I guess I understand why. I can live with it.”

On one of the fall’s first chilly nights, Marilynn Sweeney’s focus was on the weather as she waited. She wondered if the theater could install more than the two detectors it has in order to ease the bottleneck, especially since winter is just beginning.

“I don’t want to be standing out here in February,” she said.

    Was the security necessary?

“Not for the dance crowd,” she said, and laughed.
