Revolver servicing
I inherited my grandfathers Ruger Security Six about 25 years ago, Ive put maybe 300 rounds thru it since then. I've had no issues at all, but was wondering if I should have a smith go over it or if I'm being overly anal and paranoid that it may be slightly out of time or something else (I'm not a big wheel gun guy). None of my other family can ever recall the gun ever being gone over dating back to when my grandfather carried it as a LEO in the early-late 70s.
You may find me dead in a ditch one day. But by God, I'll be lying in a pile of brass.

Re: Revolver servicing
Here's a basic primer on checking revolvers, has helped me in the past: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B6Fh...hl=en_US&pli=1
The Ruger is a tank probably last a lifetime or two. Have a couple S&W revolvers from that era that still see some regular range use and have never considered having them checked out. Any obvious symptoms? If it's gonna bother you though get it checked. If it really bothers you send it to me. Just kidding. It ain't what they call you, it's what you answer to.

Re: Revolver servicing
All my Ruger revolvers have been like tank-like strong.
I've had zero issues with them.
If you wanna make yourself feel better and enrich your gunsmith, by all means have it looked over.
While you are at it, ask if he can improve the trigger.
I tend to wait for an actual problem, but that's me.
Edit: I see cephas and I went to the same school of metaphors...American by BIRTH, Infidel by CHOICE

Re: Revolver servicing
There is not much to go wrong. Just give it a good cleaning and scrub the cylinders and barrel. Then with it UNLOADED cock the hammer six times and make sure the cylinder locks each time. Then dry fire it some (you won't hurt anything) and make sure everything works OK.
With regular shooting a quality revolver will not "go out of time". If someone tried to play cowboy and fan fired it then maybe......But your grandfather was a LEO.

Re: Revolver servicing
It took 40,000 rounds for my Colt Trooper to need service. Arguably, that Ruger is more stout. Start shootin' - Have fun.

Re: Revolver servicing
Sounds like it's fine. But you could always give Ruger a call. They may have servicing available for that model or to just get it inspected. They have excellent customer service.

Re: Revolver servicing
Well, actually they don't . But they will treat you right regardless.
Quote from Ruger's CEO:
Strictly speaking, we do not offer the traditional “express written warranty” as legislated by Congress back in the 1970s. Mr. Ruger had always taken care of his customers without the help of Congress telling him what he could and could not do or lots of legal language and phrases written in all capital letters.
So, we still just simply take care of our consumers. If you have a problem, contact us and we’ll take care of it. If it is anything we’re remotely responsible for, you won’t see an invoice. And, even if it is something you are responsible for, often you won’t see an invoice if you’re nice to our Customer Service folks.
