What is the point of subsonic ammo?
I have known about subsonic 22s all my life and have shot a few but what is the point? I know it is quieter but what else? Why don't we see subsonics in other calibers?

It's much quieter when suppressed, takes away the supersonic crack you hear that can't be suppressed.

Re: What is the point of subsonic ammo?
2 things.
1.) Reduced noise - especially with a suppressor. Many centerfire pistol rounds are subsonic & work well with suppressors. They also make subsonic 300 blackout. I believe you can get other calibers in subsonic loadings, but they would be more rare as far as I know. I also shoot subsonic 308 with a suppressor & it's very quiet.
2.) Keeps the bullet out of the transonic speed range. This is where the bullet is slowing from super to sub sonic & can cause instability leading to reduced accuracy. Since 22lr velocity is generally not too far above supersonic anyways, match ammo is often just under the speed of sound to eliminate that variable.

Re: What is the point of subsonic ammo?
Once you shoot 300 Blackout using supersonic then subsonic suppressed then you will understand the point. The 300 Blackout is amazing when silenced using subsonic ammo. Like NathanB said I am also almost shooting 9mm and 300 Blackout exclusively now.

Re: What is the point of subsonic ammo?
I suppose that conversely, a thread titled "What is the point of suppressors?" the answer would be "to shoot subsonic ammo with!"

Re: What is the point of subsonic ammo?
because in a concrete box that I call my home range, the difference between super and sub sonic ammo can be the difference between a box or two shot and damn i've been here for 5 hours and tore up 2000 rounds!

I have read on this forum that A lot of European countries that allow hunting in parks near cities or suburbs require suppressors.
