I have the chance to get one and I know nothing about them, it's in good shape. What's a good price for it and who can school me on these.
I know Mauser rifles and 1903 springfield

Need to know which one of these "Enfield's" you are looking at? The U.S. also made a M1917 Enfield that was used in WWI. And the Brit's made a Pattern 1914 Enfield.

Re: enfield no4 mk1
There are something like 13 different versions of the Lee Enfield. Can you provide any more detail? In addition, like many military rifles, they were manufactured by numerous countries.
If this one is in .303, milsurp ammo has been hard to find in recent years. I still come across it sporadically at gun shows with typical prices ranging from 75 cents to $1 per round. Commercial ammo is manufactured by numerous companies and ranges from $14 to $30 per box of 20.

Re: enfield no4 mk1
Most prices I see at the gun shows for a No 4 Mk 1 are $300-$500. Back in the mid 90s you could get an unissued, wrapped in wax paper and twine, copy for $299. Last year I saw one at the Lebanon show, still in the wax paper, with a price tag of $1100.
I picked one up from Taylor's Trading Post approx. 4 years ago for $300. That got me a rifle with excellent barrel/receiver. The only catch was it was a high school shop project where the kid had "restored" the stock with a heavy coat of satin varnish.
The No 4 Mk 1 is a great rifle. If the condition and price is right I recommend going for it.

Re: enfield no4 mk1
No expert here but I would guess around $350 for a decent one.
.303 British is pretty close to .308 in ballistics. There aren't as many manufacturers producing .303 British as there used to be and the surplus has dried up but I can find ammo regularly for about $.75 a round.

Re: enfield no4 mk1
A no4 mk1 in good shape, I'd say around $400 seems like the going rate for a nice example. A little more or less depending on condition. Significantly less if it's been bubba'd, which a lot were. As far as.303 ballistics, it's very similar to .308. Commercial ammo and reloading components are pretty readily available, surplus not so much. Expect to pay around .308 prices for it. PPU is probably the best deal out there for @ $15/16 a box.

OP is being tricky. The original thread title didn't have the "4" in it. That helps to narrow the field a bit.

Re: enfield no4 mk1
My no. 4 mk 2 is one of my favorite rifles.....highly recommend getting a no. 4. That said, ammo is getting both harder to find and pricier when you do find it. I started reloading for mine.

Re: enfield no4 mk1
I have two; I paid $300.00 for one and $350.00 for the second. Both are in very good condition for surplus rifles. Both were bought from private sales within the last 3 years. I looked for many years to find two nice ones for what I was willing to pay. Dealers would want more. They are a fun range gun. If you don’t reload the PPU ammo would be your best bet. I have shot several boxes for the brass. It’s not bad ammo for the price.
