The sheriff deputy at my courthouse said we have 6 months after it expires. Of course they could have read it on this forum.

There is no "grace period". So long as you are still legally qualified to receive a license, you are exempt from that requirement for 6 months beyond expiration. Keep/carry that expired license, as it will support you, should you need to make use of that exemption to prove you are legal to carry.

    6106(b)(12):
    (12) A person who has a lawfully issued license to carry
a firearm pursuant to section 6109 (relating to licenses) and
that said license expired within six months prior to the date
of arrest and that the individual is otherwise eligible for
    renewal of the license.

prior to the date of arrest
Given this wording I would be worried that you would have to prove in court after an arrest that you could have gotten a renewal.

I would renew ASAP! If you are in Luzerne it looks like you can apply in person, as in Monday morning, take the morning off if you can..

If you do not then you can choose to run the risk of issues with an expired licence, maybe these are minimal maybe not, or you can be unarmed.

First, cops may not know this. Carry a copy of the law with you. Second, who is going to determine you are still qualified to have a license so that you meet the exception? The cop? The judge?

Be discrete and renew your license ASAP.

I agree any cop will yank your chain with an expired permit no matter what the fine print says. Renew ASAP
