Question about handgun transfer
OK here's the story:
I am helping a very close friend of the family move. He is moving from a house to a small apartment and clearing out a lot of his stuff. He asks me if I want a gun. It belonged to his father and my friend never had any interest in handguns. It's a single action revolver in .357mag. It was purchased late 60's or early 70's at a Sears & Roebuck store.
My question is, can he just hand me this gun? What has to happen to make it legal? Does it need to be transferred through an FFL? I am sure it was bought before such transfers had to be done, but I don't know if that makes a difference.
Any thoughts?Last edited by vrocco; August 7th, 2008 at 10:23 AM.

But to answer your question, a revolver is considered a "firearm" as per the UFA. It doesn't matter the gun was made 30-40 years ago, an FFL must perform the transfer in order for your friend to sell the gun to you. If he just hands you the gun with the intent of you keeping it, you are both involved in an illegal firearms transaction."Political Correctness is just tyranny with manners"

Re: Question about handgun transfer
I'll second what CR said. Do the transfer through a FFL. You can ask a sheriff to do the transfer but most won't and will tell you to go to a FFL.
