    Default Win 231 replacement

Morning Everyone & Happy New Year.
Been out of the loop for a while.
Now that Winchester 231 is discontinued, what ball powders did you/are moving to?

I have been using W231 for 9mm & 45 ACP in Progressive presses, now down to my last 2 pounds.
I have tried Titegroup in the past, but was a bit too dirty.

Although I have many pounds of W231 in inventory, I've been buying every pound of HP-38 I see. It's the same powder. W231 has disappeared, but oddly I still see HP-38 on shelves.

Thanks, but i have also found that H38 is not to be found as well.

Accurate #5 is a good powder for 9mm. I also like Power Pistol. At this writing both are currently available.

    Check Ammoseek for availability. http://ammoseek.com/about.html

It is less expensive than most local shops, even after hazard fees.

Doesn't matter much if it is discontinued or not if it is not available on the market. W231 was my go to powder for bullseye target loads in .38 Spec. and .45 ACP. HP-38 worked just as well and is the same powder. But I've seen neither on the market for roughly 2 years. I tried Titegroup once but wasn't impressed. Referring back to my nearly ancient Lyman #45 it seems Red Dot offers the same performance for target loads so I'll be using that.

Accurate #5 is good for standard velocity loads for many if not most calibers. I've had very good results for loads that had to meet IDPA power factor with good accuracy too! VV 320 seems to be a good powder also though it is a little tougher going through my Dillon powder measure. I believe I've published chrono results for a number of my "experiments".

Anyhow, if you can't find any, then it might as well be discontinued. As a short term replacement give Winchester WST a play. It's nearly identical in that its a spherical, double base powder (same as 231) with similar burn rate.

I have bought HP38 twice on line over the last two years. Just have to be quick.

CFEPistol is, I believe, Hodgdon's concept of a "new process" pistol powder.
