shotgun powder identification
I got a lee load all 12ga press it was full to the brim with powder and shot pellet. I need some help finding out what powder is in the hopper please. Looks to be some kind of flake powder with blue or green paper flakes in with it. Attachment 79303

Re: shotgun powder identification
Looks like 700x. Don't quote me though.
Are you looking to use it or just curious? Be weary of powder left in a hopper for a period of time.FOAC Member, NRA Member

Re: shotgun powder identification
It's a flake. That's about all I can tell you about it.
Dump the powder on the back yard. It is unknown to you. It may be Blue Dot, it may be Green Dot, it may be both mixed together when the previous owner accidentally dumped one on top of the other. It may even be some imported or obsolete powder that has both blue and green flakes in it, but burns like Red Dot (REALLY FAST). For the $25 that a new pound of powder costs, it's not worth the risk (to your body parts or the gun).Soap Box - Worn out : Ballot Box - Broken : Jury Box - Pending : Ammunition Box - Unknown

Re: shotgun powder identification
Well i loaded 10rds using the powder and pellets. I think i'm gonna give it a try just wondering what powder it was so i can get more. But if nobody can id the powder i will go with another powder. I'm pretty sure its not 700x cuz i use 700x for 9mm and 45 loads and it does not look like it. When i got the press it looked like it has been used alot using this load. I measured the powder and it reads 18.8gr to 19.8gr. I can try and get a better pic if needed maybe under a microscope.

Re: shotgun powder identification
Could be Blue or Green Dot.
Whatever is in the hopper is not worth a damaged gun or a trip to the ER.
YMMV

Re: shotgun powder identification
Seriously dude, tear down those loads, dump the powder and buy a new can of powder - where you KNOW what's in the can. Fuck the gun at this point - I'm not concerned about damage to a replaceable inanimate object. The possible risk to your body is not worth the $25 you just "saved".Soap Box - Worn out : Ballot Box - Broken : Jury Box - Pending : Ammunition Box - Unknown

It looks like premium flake flower bed fertilizer.

My bet would be green dot. However it's disaster in the making.
It ain't what they call you, it's what you answer to.

Do not load and shoot that. Are you nuts?

Re: shotgun powder identification
If I had to guess I would say it is Green Dot, because Green Dot is one of the most commonly used powders for 12ga loads for targets.
That being said I agree with everyone else that is telling you to just dump that powder and buy new. Green Dot is a good powder for 12ga target loads.
