I could not agree more..Best time of the year. If anyone is interested it would be great to set up a 2A flint lock hunt. I would propose SGL 117, Hillman, or Raccon state park.

I know this is probably a dumb question, but "flintlock" season means no percussion cap, right? Like a pan of powder and a hammer with a flint? It goes off a couple seconds after you pull the trigger as long as you didn't shake it and it's not raining?

    Correct.
Also no optics allowed either, though peep sights are allowed.

I thought real peep sights were forbidden. They make a "semi buckhorn" that is a peep with the top removed and that is legal. If tang peeps are legal I would get a set today. Scopes are legal in the early season.
The flash takes something like 1/3 second according to guys that have the equipment to measure such events. It seems like seconds, but it is much less. Better rifles have shorter ignition times. Placement of the flash hole and lock design has a large impact on time along with where and how much powder is in the pan. It takes practice to shoot one well.

    Yup, flint ignition only.
If everything is loaded correctly it goes off pretty quick, but holding on target is the name of the game.

We still have quite a few 5C tags to fill. Will be out with the flintlock, bow, crossbow and shotgun over the next month. Our goal is to contribute 4 deer to HSH this season. My other goal is to harvest my first deer with a flintlock

Instead, we have an extended firearms season for shotguns.
Up north, I could walk for hours and see no sign of other hunters, here, there is a guy with an 870 every hundred yards away.

A nice smooth lock, good flint, good frizzen steel, dry pan powder, and the right amount of pan powder, and the ignition is almost instantaneous. Getting all of those things to happen is key....It makes it a challenge.
