"Modern" pistol bullets for self defense
So, as many people know, the FBI is moving to 9mm for their service weapons. That decision is reportedly based on solid science & the fact that "modern" bullets are so good. This got me thinking: Is there a resource to get real, non-marketing B.S. info on handgun projectiles offered to us for reloading?
I've been using Hornady XTP in my 357 sig & 44 magnum reloads because they're affordable bullets that should be suitable for SD. If I could see some info comparing different projectiles & their terminal performance characteristics, I might switch to something else.

So does this mean the abundant supply and affordability of 9mm ammo is about to get flushed? I was considering moving to 9mm also.

That's a good question. I'm not buying factory stuff, but it seems there's always a corresponding run on reloading components when there's a shortage of loaded ammo for sale.

I did some work for the army on terminal ballistics a little while back. I believe those reports are published and unclassified. Google scholar search it and you'll find a good number of papers on the subject.

Re: "Modern" pistol bullets for self defense
They are moving to 9mm so women can shoot pistols more effectively, same with organizations like the State of Texas, despite great success with 357 SIG, women struggle with it, hence moving onto the new found 9mm.
I've seen all these articles in the gun rags this year about how the 40 cal is dead and all that, I'm not a big 40 cal fan myself but I think organizations and people get caught up in these fads beyond what they need to.
In regards to reloading, is there really much difference between a Speer Gold Dot or Hornady XTP? Both are going to hurt the same.

No "modern" bullet can make someone more dead than the other if its not in the right spot.
Shot placement still trumps bullet design.
.........unless they legalize exploding ammo for public usewww.Steelvalleycasting.com is your new home for coated bullets and custom ammo.
