My usual response is "Because it's too cumbersome to carry a Police Office with me everywhere I go. You know you got to feed them, and care for them, and then my hands are occupied trying to keep them around my waist"

The one time that I went to a State Police station, they asked me to leave my pocket knife at the counter before we went into the back.
