Brigadier general dies of gunshot wound
Associated Press - July 28, 2008 9:24 PM ET
ELMENDORF AIR FORCE BASE, Alaska (AP) - Air Force officials say the commander at Elmendorf Air Force Base likely died last night (Sunday) of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Brigadier General Thomas L. Tinsley suffered a gunshot wound to his chest.
Colonel Richard Walberg assumed command at Elmendorf after Tinsley's death.
At a news conference, Walberg said representatives of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology will make a final ruling on the cause of death.
Walberg says he went to bed at about 10 p.m. Sunday and the phone rang ten to 15 minutes later.
The caller from the base command post said there had been a gunshot across the street at the general's home.
Walberg rushed over and met a base medical officer who attempted to save the general's life.
Tinsley was declared dead at 10:30 p.m.
Walberg says Tinsley was not under investigation and was not under undue stress.
He says no note from Tinsley was found.
Tinsley was named base commander in May 2007.
He had served as jet fighter pilot and instructor pilot.
His previous 22-month assignment was executive officer to the Air Force chief of staff, General T. Michael "Buzz" Mosely, who in June resigned under pressure in an agency shake-up.
