WARNING: IMR 5010 surplus powders...
I recently saw somewhere on the net about surplus IMR 5010 powders breaking down and after I poked around today I found that there were a number of houses that burned down because of the breakdown and self combustion of this powder.
If you bought any of this powder back in the 2000s from Talon, Hi tech, GI Brass or else ware check it immediately. If you smell a strong ammonia or acidic smell ditch it immediately.
I found three jugs that were really bad. I checked and the ball powders like WC 820, 860, 872 do not seem to be affected.

Re: WARNING: IMR 5010 surplus powders...
Does that include virgin 5010? Mine smells just like it did in 07. And what about already loaded ammo, I guess that is affected also?
I just emailed pats reloading where I bought mine. When they get back to me I'll post the results,.Last edited by bogey1; September 4th, 2015 at 08:03 AM.

It's possible that the virvin may not be affected, but you never know it might have been pulldown repackaged. Just check to make sure. My guess is that the ammo maybe affected too and i have around 500 or so rounds that I loaded some years back with that powder..

Re: WARNING: IMR 5010 surplus powders...
I loaded them in 2012 I ran into a article on the web last week when I was looking for loading data.
It was a article I saw before I loaded mine, but just blew it off. So I decided to check. Sure enough,
some went bad. I just opened the jar of powder, you cant take a big whiff it'll burn your nose out.
It smells like chlorine. I have about 2.5lbs of it in a container, when I go up state next I'll throw it in the fire pit.
