Default ATF Background Checks......what takes them so long?

I have always been curious why it takes 4 months to perform a background check. What databases are they checking, and is there any earthly reason why it should take so long? People get high security clearance to work in the government in a shorter span of time. Just wondering what exactly they look at, because it seems like a dog and pony show to me.

It isn't that the actual check takes 4 months, it's that it take a while to get to your actual application to be run with all the other things those poor overworked government employees have to do. After all, them donuts ain't gonna eat themselves.

LOL simple really. Too many applications and not enough people to process them. They now have some new inspectors which is why it's only 4 months. Not long ago it was almost a year. But it's not the actual check that takes so long.

Am I guessing back when they reduced their funding most here were all good with it.

I have an inquiring mind and would also like to know WTF takes them so long? Are they just that overwhelmed by applications, or is it just a deterrent tactic hoping that if the $200 doesn't scare away the NFA newbie that perhaps combined with the thought of waiting 5-6 months they deter potential buyers.

These are registered items. Seems to me that after the first purchase any subsequent purchases should be quicker?

There is a video out there of a tour given of where they do the investigation showing the massive piles of applications.

One of you google experts can post it.

Imagine having to jump through all of these hoops to get the right to vote.

Or drive (not even a Constitutional right).

With the efile system why does a person even need to review it? They should be able to automate it and not only process faster but save money Too.

Oh lordy, automated review of efiled forms? If the system would be anything like efile itself it would be a disaster waiting for the first time the fragile system gets a little overworked.

Oh in sure it would be a shit show but it is 2015. There is no reason for a manual review of every fucking application.
