Bear spray ........ I carry it on my pedal bike.
Sometimes riding in the alleys to avoid cars running me over and I end up with dogs that come running out of their yards chasing me.
I figure it's better than trying to sling led from a moving pedal bike.
    It's worth having.
And if the dog wasn't really going to bite , fido can go back home and play with the kids once he comes to his senses.
And I've never had to spray the same dog twice

good point, but the neighbor did step up to the situation and apologize, i would keep an eye on the neighbor to see if he corrects the situation before making any decisions.

My Dad was a UPS driver for 25+ years and in that time had over 100 dog encounters. One of the things he taught me is, if bitten, push your arm deeper into the dog's mouth and apply pressure to the back of their head to force the issue. In other words, if the dog thinks they want that arm, offer the whole thing right now.

When my brother's doberman was a pup (but still taller than me when standing on hind legs), she was going through a stage where she didn't realize her own strength when playing. She latched onto my arm and immediately I grabbed the back of her head and shoved my forearm deeper in her mouth. Just as quickly, she let go.

Based on my Dad's experience, I gather that this changes the mind of the dog for what s/he really wants. At the same time, you're moving your arm to a place in the dog's mouth where they have less pressure and their teeth aren't as sharp.

My GF was bitten by a neighbors dog last year. Shortly thereafter, the same dog charged us. I had my sidearm drawn and was shouting "NO!" at the dog. Luckily for everyone, he stopped literally 2 feet from the distance I had determined was shooting range.
It's all fun and games, until someone loses an eye. Then it is hilarious.

When in recon in the Corps in the 60s we were schooled on what to do if attacked by a dog since the NVA used dogs to track down recon folks.

Amazingly, the training kicked in 50 years later. I knew not to move my arm because if I did the dog would be motivated to to start wagging its head, and then my arm would be ground meat. Training told me to freeze in place, eat the pain, and look the dog in the eyes. Those two actions actually confuse the dog because it is expecting a totally different reaction. Then I shouted No, No, No, Let Go, Let go.. In Nam that would be futile because the dog would have no recognition of English command.

Meanwhile, the confused pit bull started to relax its bite as I hollered the No command, but it did not release. So the next step was to punch the dog in the nose. Dogs do not like to have their nosed attacked because they rely upon them. That made the incisor bites a bit longer, but the dog released and backed off. The best defense is a good offense. Then its owner restrained it, and I went to the emergency room for treatment. A year later everything is OK, and the dog was not put down at my request.

All that said, if the dog had attacked my pet, I would have killed it because my pet was not trained to deal with such an attack.
    I did not know this.

Of course, you could try to kill the animal without a gun (which might be the point you were trying to make), but clubs, knives or garbage can lids are a far more difficult way of accomplishing the task at hand.
Where do you buy your garbage cans...

In addition to a pistol, I carry pepper spray to deal with dogs. I like having a non lethal means in which to deal with them.

That applies to use against people and general self defense too. You should not allow yourself to be in a situation where your only two options are do nothing or use lethal force. You should carry multiple options of varying degrees, both non-lethal and lethal.

Some situations won't call for lethal force and using it will ruin your life legally.

I usually have a knife, spray and pistol on me.
