Default Shipping charges pretty much kills online ammo deals

I have always bought all the ammo I need at the Oaks gun show. Sportsman’s Guide has good prices on ammo ($21 for a box of S&B 45) so I picked up 5 boxes and went to the checkout where shipping charges came out to $15.99. What started out as a good deal is suddenly a very bad deal. What’s your experience?

Same. Like evil bay sellers - they can make coin on shipping.

I think it depends on how good the deal is and how bad you want that ammo. AIM had some 7.62x54R on stripper clips a while back that was super cheap. Even with the shipping cost, it was still cheaper per round than Wolf was (at the time, before shipping).

Sounds a little amateur. The best ammo prices are online, including shipping. Buy cases. Sportsman’s Guide rarely has even good base prices on ammo without considering shipping, but I have seen exceptions. Those are my experiences as requested.

Freedom Munitions offers free shipping on orders over $100 from time to time.
I have yet to have any issues using them.

Its just a matter of shopping around. For example: I just searched for 230gr S&B 45ACP on Ammoseek and found:

    SGAmmo.com $15.95@ + shipping 5 boxes =$14

    Natchezss.com $15.99@ + shipping 5 boxes = $16.85

Based on your $21 price I would have saved $25 on 5 boxes to more than offset shipping.

    ---------------------------
Some companies are fixed price shipping but reflect a higher unit cost:

    www.Grafs.com $21.59 + shipping 5 boxed = $7.95

    ---------------------------

    Some ammo search engines:
    www.Ammoseek.com
    www.Wikiarms.com
    ---------------------------

Just need to either buy larger quantities to lessen unit shipping costs or pay higher unit price for fixed price shipping (ex: Graf & Sons).
    IANAL

Don't necessarily hate the player, look at UPS hazmat fees for ORM-D. They are just dealing with it.

That being said- yea always keep shipping in mind. Your LGS may not get a pallet of ammo and just a few cases and has to pay the same fee. So don't be surprised when the cost is about the same. A few years back when I was selling some bulk ammo on here I was able to cut costs because I was already at the out of state wholesaler and the ammo was extra.

Yea shipping costs stink. Wait for free shipping periods. PSA has them quite often for orders $100+.
