Re: Buying a gun from another customer at a gun store?
Many stores own their own parking lot so that is not necessarily a reprieve. Why would a store allow anyone to 'snipe' their customer base when they have overhead and pay to advertise services etc. I am sure gunlawyer001 nor anyone with a business would put up with that.

Re: Buying a gun from another customer at a gun store?
If the OP had never excitedly opened his trap without thinking and just posted his other business transactions in the store I don't think anyone would be defending this shops business practices. Weekend price jacks, multiple transfer charges, and so on sounds like a really shit place to deal with as far as I am concerned. What the OP did wasn't cool but sometimes we all open our mouths without even thinking it happens.
Another negative against the FFL is the fact they told him it's illegal to do what he did yet they still did the transfer for another $50.00. I guess they don't value their FFL very much if it was so illegal. I don't think too many shops are going to complain about making $85.00 in 15 minutes time for only having to fill out some paper work as well as their bound book. Larger shops that move heavier volume have people in the back who handle the bound books once the transactions are done and they get paid regardless. It seems too me that they had the option to ask him to leave after that but still kept him around to take his cash.
OP use the parking lot next time or you will be shunned from the gun community for good.Last edited by Hodgie; June 4th, 2015 at 11:29 PM.

Re: Buying a gun from another customer at a gun store?
Sorry this thread has gone so far off topic. I tried to acknowledge that I made a mistake from the start. My question was whether I actually violated some ATF regulation that would cause problems for the FFL as the store employee stated. If I violated a store policy, then that is different. I think I fell into criticizing the store and their fees. They have every right to charge whatever they want and, in the dozens of transfers I have done over the past few years, I have only used this particular store three times when it was the seller's choice so I'm not overly concerned about their policies, their charges, or whether they choose to or not to service me. Thanks to those who replied to the original question.

Re: Buying a gun from another customer at a gun store?
I would not feel bad about getting a good deal over a gun shop. I have been low balled so many times by gun shops when trading or selling guns. Also anything more then $5 for a background check is a rip off. I have a gun shop near me in south western PA who rips people off left and right. I tell everyone I know who is buying a gun not to go there. I bend over backwards to make this guy lose business.

Re: Buying a gun from another customer at a gun store?
Slightly different scenario, but, I was in my LGS once buying at a used P95.
A guy walks in looking to sell an identical P95, though with a couple extra mags.
The owner could only offer a fraction of the retail value, which is normal He was a good regular customer, in need of money. The owner walked over to me and asked if I'd be interested in buying the guys gun. I gave him the same price the store was asking for theirs.
It was win win for all. I got a good gun at a fair price. The other guy got full retail for his gun. Store made a few bucks on the transfer, more important, they made two customers very happy. I ended up selling the gun on consignment with the store later, so they made a profit on it at that point. Plus I've spent boatloads more at the store over the years.

Re: Buying a gun from another customer at a gun store?
When he was open full time and I frequented his shop, Glenn's in Annville made a practice of writing the offer on a Post-It note so only the seller could see. There were many times I would hear the seller say the offer was too low and I had to bite my tongue to resist asking the amount. Glenn's selling prices always seemed fair and I had too much respect for him as a small shop owner to ask inside the store. On a few occassions I did ask once outside but in all cases the sellers had over inflated values in mind.
