Re: Buying a gun from another customer at a gun store?
They charge $35 weekdays and $50 weekends. I got them to drop to $35 for the first two transfers because it was a three-way transfer so they got $70. The next transfer (for the gun I bought from a customer) they charged me $50 even though they already had my clearance number so they didn't need to call in again. So I ended up paying $85 total for two transfers and another guy I was working with paid $35 for one transfer. In retrospect, they did pretty good for not a lot of work. Wish I could find a way to make $85 for 15 minutes work!

Re: Buying a gun from another customer at a gun store?
If i respected the shop, i would never make a move like that inside the store. As other have said, it isn't against any law or regulation, but it is bad form, to me. If i read your post correctly, the shop agreed to do the transfer even after you pulled the rug out from under them, which was pretty decent of them, since shops are not required to do transfers. Most shops only pay about 40% of the value of a used gun, so they make a hell of alot more on a used piece than new.

Re: Buying a gun from another customer at a gun store?
Wow, I can't believe people are paying $50 for a transfer, I bitch when I have to pay $25, lol. The last time I did 3 I paid $45 and I thought that was high.
As for the deal in the shop, I almost did a similar thing a few years ago and it was also on an Xd but in 9mm. I was just browsing when a young guy came in to sell an Xd9 service in excellent shape and they only offered him $200 for it. I had to bite my tongue to keep from doing exactly what you did but I figured he would turn it down and I was going to follow him outside and offer him $250 and I'd pay for the transfer at another place right down the road. The dumbass took the $200. I already have the same gun but figured if I could get it that cheap I'd keep it for a few years and gift it to one of my kids when they turned 18.

Re: Buying a gun from another customer at a gun store?
Let me point out that if they are collecting "sales tax" and not paying most of it over to the state, they have a serious legal issue going on...
