Uh, hmm. I don't think you're picking up what I'm putting down. Aubie515 is tracking.

    Leupold VX1 4x12x40 is right at $300.

Cameraland NY is a great place to source Vortex demo (open box display) optics. Call the guy, he's really nice and make sure they have what you want in stock. He's been known to substitute new optics to fill orders as well. I have a 2.5-10 x 44 Viper HS on my SPR that is perfect for my needs. Arrived in immaculate shape, was shipped/arrived to my door within 3 days.

    Here is a complete list....

    Heres a couple vipers, 4-12 x 40 or 3.5-10 x 50 for $349/$339 respectively.

SWFA makes bomber optics too as suggested by AM and others.

OP didn't mention budget, but it looks like budget max is around $300.

You would be hard pressed to find a better optic for $300 by choosing something other than SWFA 12x is my personal choice. Keep in mind it's a fixed 12x versus being a variable.

Nikon makes ok glass at that price point. If it was my money, I'd opt for a Vortex and call it a day. I've owned Nikons in the past, but these days Vortex always get first consideration.
Thanks for the insight, I really appreciate it. I'm not too worried about getting much higher of a magnification than 10x for the reasons you've mentioned, plus I hit well at 200 with a 4x on my muzzleloader.. I'm definitely going to look at the SWFA

For hunting in the woods and thicker stuff a 4x is too much mag for me. A 2.5 or 3 is better. For the OP a decent 2.5-10X40 or 42 would be good IMO. You can dial it down to 2.5 if you get into thick stuff. Something like the Nikon Monarch 3 2.5-10x42.

this is the one I have. The glass is super. Not a super fancy optic but it works for me.....

They have a ballistic calculator online as well for some rough ideas with factory loads and their reticles if you go Vortex. Kind of neat messing around with it.

It took me awhile to finally get around to purchasing a scope, but I finally did it. Needed to get it in before I get married so the wife to be can't complain too much about it. Anyways, I ended up going with the Vortex Diamondback 4-12x40 with a Warne base and Vortex rings. The Diamondback was on sale on Amazon and had free one day shipping. Between that, the warranty, and the reviews I decided to go with it. All said and done, the base, rings, and scope cost me under 200 bucks

I hope to sight it in this Monday, so I'll try to post about how it performs shortly

I wouldn't get a Diamondback or Crossfire for a magnum caliber. I'd get the low end Diamondback/Crossfire for say 223 or rimfire.

OP is going to spend big bucks on brown bear/moose hunt and he's going to spend what on a scope?

I called Vortex a few weeks ago and the Diamondback was their recommendation, so I went with it. Will it not handle the recoil?
