You can pick up two Ruger p-series for your suggested budget. Or one gun and a lot of ammo and range time.

Another vote here for any of the CZ 75 lineup. Stupidly reliable, accurate, durable, and ergonomic.

Second vote would go to a used Browning Hi-Power. Third would be a Ruger SR9 or SR9C.

I handled the VP9 with night sights the other day and really liked it and I also liked the xdm9. I don't own a Springfield, HK, FN or sig. I was also interested in nite owl firearms but no one has one to handle yet. One brand I'd like to avoid is walther. Any suggestions?
What do you currently carry? I like having my oh-shit guns to be somewhat, not exactly similar. For example, my primary carry piece is M&P compact so my HD handgun is a full size M&P. But I also carry a Glock G30s. I like them all to be striker fired, no safety or de-cocker to worry about one one gun and not the other.

Walther PPQ, most people seem to prefer the M2 ('regular' mag release). Hands down the best trigger of any striker-fired pistol on the market. It's railed for light or laser (I have a laser), 15 rounds, accepts after-market night sights. The trigger is absolutely amazing.

Glock 17, or M&P9 if it fits your hand better. Buy whatever feels best, has your preference for safety/no safety, and points correctly for you.

Quality wise, you're not going to go wrong with any polymer pistol from a major manufacturer in that price range. They're all pretty equal.

For a dedicated home defense/range gun, I would personally go with a G34, but I'm a Glock guy.

What is preventing any of your current firearms from being that home defense gun? It sounds like all or most of your firearms may be compact to sub-compact, but for short-distance firing, the slightly smaller barrel should not make that much of a difference with practice. Having a compact gun with interchangeable magazines like a glock is a plus in my opinion. However, one can buy 9 and 10 round magazines for small guns like a kel tec or a bersa.

But hey, if you're looking to buy another one, go right ahead!
    ...and they have a plan...
