AR upper/barrel/handguard question...
I have been thinking about build my own upper, rather then buy upper kit.
My question is that how free floating hand guard attach to barrel?
I know that normal non free froating handguard is held between front handguard cap, and delta cap on rear of barrel.
So I need to buy upper, barrel retaining ring, weld spring, delta ring, barrel nut, barrel, gasblock(Im thinking about no front sight type), gas tube. But what else do I need, if I want to get something like pic below?
And better yet, do those free float tube comes with everything I need(that would be ideal)
I'm thinking of straight A3 upper(with forword assist, shell deferector and ejection port cover).
Thinking ob DPMS or RRI.
But I'm not sure of barrel yet, since I haven't figured out length, twist rate or none of that...Audemus jura nostra defendere

Re: AR upper/barrel/handguard question...
All that I have ever used come with there own barrel nut. The handguard will then bolt to or screen onto the barrel nut provided. I've never seen a FF handguard that doesn't give you the nut as part of the kit but some , such as Yankee Hill, have special wrenches to assist in the installation. If you are set on building your own upper, which I would recommend, make sure you just spend the money and buy the proper tools. Just my .02 on your upper choice, check out Yankee Hill. I just did a build on one and it is top notch. I got it for $92.

That handguard will come with a nut. The nut will have holes that the gas tube will pass thru. If you have a wrench with three pins, it will work (assuming the barrel will clear the wrench). You will not need: barrel retaining ring, weld spring, delta ring, barrel nut. You will need a gas block and gas tube. And a carrier, complete and bolt, complete, unless you are using an old one. And of course the upper, charging handle, door and spring, forward assist, spring and pin. If you need a wrench, I’m in Bellwood real close to I99.

penguinland, I'll be sure to check out yankee hill. thanks for the info.
SteveWag, so your saying I don't need to get barrel retaining ring, weld spring, delta ring, barrel nut. Do you mean that whatever FF tube I buy would comes with them, or own barrel nut that'll likely comes with FF tube would replace all that?
And yeah, your not far. I may take up on your offer!Audemus jura nostra defendere

If you look here,
http://www.rockriverarms.com/index.c...ategory_id=277
you can see 12, 13, 14 are just used to hold the rear handguard, the guard is the std. AR style. A barrel will come with 14 and 15, the float tube will come with 17 although looking different. PM me and stop by.

If you don't have the M4 armorers manual yet I would strongly recommend downloading it. It has directions for everything and also torque specs
