Re: Allegheny County Sheriff's Reserve
For the Motorcycle Division, how long do you need to have been a rider? Do the bikes have to be painted up in County Sheriff colors? Do they have to have a certain displacement, or can I just have a 250cc bike for this? Hard locking saddle bags? I'm picking up my first bike in August and I have passed the MSF BRC.
Can you do this if your a state government employee? I don't want to violate the civil service laws and all.
Cordially,
Eric

Re: Allegheny County Sheriff's Reserve
I know the applicant is responsible for purchasing all equipment, however, are there any requirements on the specific firearm needed or can the applicant use say an XD-45 if already owned?

Re: Allegheny County Sheriff's Reserve
The Reserves is a joke! Your looked down upon by the downtown full time deputies. They wont allow you to make any arrest so that statement on their website that says "full powers of arrest" is a lie! Additionally, you cant write or issue summary citations but they train you how to do it during the academy. You have to take your own personal vehicle to details...most of the time and i could go on! Your just a glorified security guard in a Sheriff's uniform. The only decent thing was the training specifically the firearms training. Me having an Act 120 and being a sworn police officer offered nothing else besides the great firearms training. If you look at it in a whole, the real sheriff's dont get any respect from other police agencies. But i dont support that because we are all on the same team. I am here to tell you that the Reserves... its a joke! If you want some decent basic police training, then join the ranks. Other than that and most of the Reserve Deputies are cool, you will get nothing but headaches and quit soon after commencement like many others have done in the past! Dont be fooled and dont get suckered in!

Re: Allegheny County Sheriff's Reserve
Honestly i have to agree totally with GHOST on this one esp since Mullen took over. I have family in it as well as know the one whom started it many years ago. It is not worth the time nor NO pay, u do not have the right to arrest and when you see an incident you must call the local police while you detain the suspects( which most of the times is a 16 year old punk at the fair). You spend around 2500-3000$ on what you need to buy and you have the option to pass on tests in training of which you do NOT get at the academy for LEO jobs. All in all it really is a glorified security gaurd but with carrying a pistol. But to each its own...........

Re: Allegheny County Sheriff's Reserve
I could be wrong, but I always took it as if most of the reserves did it because they want to give something back to the community? I don't know of any who are in it for respect, or for the "thrill" of an arrest.
