Winchester 97 Advice Needed
I recently picked up a Winchester 97 takedown which was manufactured in 1928 according to the serial number. From what I have read, the chamber should be checked if it is 2 3/4" rather than 2 5/8". It seems that more often than not the chamber must be lengthed as well as making the forcing cone longer. Any suggestions as to where to go to have this done? I live near Cabela's in Hamburg, but willing to travel a reasonable distance. Thank you.

Re: Winchester 97 Advice Needed
Take it up to Enck's gun barn in Newmanstown. the 97 is very popular in cowboy action shooting and lengthening the chamber is a pretty common thing to have to do.

Re: Winchester 97 Advice Needed
Enck's is definitely the place to go. 97's are used by many shooters in Cowboy competition.

Re: Winchester 97 Advice Needed
I asked this very question of my fellow SASS shooters when my wife bought a 97 (built in 1918) for competition. Of the guys shooting original 97's, none of them ever had their chambers checked and they ran regular 2 3/4" shells without any issue. That being said, my wife did have Enck's do a once over on the gun, as well as had them shorten the barrel and stock. She's been running it in Cowboy Action for the past four seasons, and it works great.
