Default 30.06 vs 270 yes I'm going there

Ok so I want to get a new bolt gun. I've owned both but have more trigger/reloading time with the 270. I have a love affair with the 30.06 and let's be for real just saying 30.06 is awesome!! What's you preference in a hunting rifle caliber? This will 99.99% of the time be a PA hunting rifle and buying both isn't an option and distances will be less than 400yds for any ethical shot I would take. Let me hear what your preference is.

I like a lot of different calibers, those two being amongst them. If we stay inside your parameters of using it on deer and possibly black bear in Pa I would choose the .270 for no other reason than it shoots a little flatter. Both have more than enough power for the task at hand. If I thought I was ever going to hunt something larger I'd find more comfort in the .30-06.

While I completely agree with you about the flatter shooting, 400yds and under I'm not sure that matters much. Beyond 500 maybe yea. I think even more realistic the distances will be under 150yds. Since I'm a ninja I've am well verse in the art of Google-Fu and from what I've seen they are very close in bullet drop and power out to 500. But hey it is the internet which coincides will real life....

It doesn't. Truth be told, at ranges out to 400 pick something between .243 and .300 mag and you're golden.

True. I just sold my savage 243. I love the caliber but the gun did nothing for me. I'll prolly just go with a weatherby vanguard or possibly a winchester 70 if I decide to pony up the scratch

One thing I noticed, .270 is always easier to find.

Had plenty of both and IMO the 30-06 is probably the best all around hunting caliber for anything in the lower 48. But for just Pa hunting I'd go with the 270,really don't need anything bigger in a long action caliber.

Really depends on what you are hunting.

30-30 or .243 would be sufficient for all critters in PA

    But having a 30-06 wouldn't hurt.

Wider array of ammunition as well as choices and awesome to reload!

    Win - win....

Give the edge to the .06 on versatility and chamber pressures....

    But, either one.......
