Cop gets stupid shoots self

This story is being widely reported that the weapon was holstered and went off in an elevator, resulting in the off duty officer being shot with his issued weapon in the stomach. Updated story using elevator footage reveals this stupidity:

A Kentucky off-duty police officer accidentally shot himself while riding in an elevator Saturday night.

Erlanger Police Officer Darryl Jouett was riding in a parking garage elevator with his wife going to their car after having dinner when his duty-issued handgun discharged, WCPO reported.

According to the elevator's surveillance video, it appears Jouett was trying to remove the semiautomatic gun from his holster when it accidentally went off.

"He was transitioning the holster and transitioning the gun out of his holster," Cincinnati Captain Michael John explained to WLWT.

"He was going to carry it in his hand as they walked to the car. As he was pulling the gun from the holster, a round discharged, ricocheted in the elevator, struck him in the stomach."

Emergency responders arrived at the scene in Over-the-Rhine and took the officer to University of Cincinnati Medical center where he was treated for the non-life-threatening injury.

Jouett's wife was not injured during the incident. It was not immediately clear if the safety was on his .40-caliber weapon, WCPO reported.

Jouett has been an officer with the Erlanger police department for over 25 years.

"It's very unusual," John said. "Obviously you have somebody that's used to handling firearms. It's very unusual to see somebody discharge a firearm, accidentally, in a confined space like that."

The only accident was this guy. Why do you take a weapon out of a perfectly working holster to carry it in your hand while walking to the car?!? Even if you are placing it in a seat holster, do you walk across a garage parking lot with a weapon in your hand?

He's been handling firearms for 25 years, so he's a pro. If he was that concerned for his and the wifes safety, he should have left it in the holster.

When the rules of safety are ignored, people will win such stupid prizes.

Right. In cop circles it's much more likely that guns will just "go off."

Wait... Its acceptable now to un-holster a sidearm and carry it in your hand while you walk to your car in a parking garage???

I can't believe that was the documented statement by his supervisor. Complete FAIL.
