Default Buyer Beware: Check you new guns

I'm going to preface this story with the fact that I'm not 100% sure it's true. I don't know the person involved and I only heard it through my employee who claims to know the individual. This story could have been completely made up. So take it for what it's worth.

Anyways the story goes that a man bought a new Israeli Firearms 50 cal desert eagle. He took it to the range and literally the first time he shot it, the round blew up in the chamber. Shrapnel went back and damaged his eye, jaw, and teeth. He ended up loosing the eye and will need multiple surgeries. The party involved took the gun to a competent gunsmith and found evidence that the barrel had multiple hairline fractures due to excessive use. The gun however was sold to them as "new and unfired."

I don't know much more than that. But I wanted to share to remind everybody to thoroughly check their firearms even if they are new. Especially above mentioned brand. Also the shooter was not wearing any type of eye protection. But I'm doubtful if that would have saved his eye.

Interesting.I had a .44 magnum Desert Eagle a few years ago until I traded it in for another handgun.

Respectfully, this sounds like the stuff of urban legends...

Regardless, if this happened to me I'd me lawyering up for some serious coin. I think I'd be a happy one eyed millionaire...

Agreed. That's what I thought as he was telling me. It could be true, it could be not true. That's why I prefaced it. True or not though, its a good reminder to extensively check a new gun. Which is why I posted it in the first place.

How does one check for "multiple hairline fractures"?

Rules are written in the stone,

Not sure. Bore light maybe. And I'm not talking about just the barrel, check the whole gun. You may find other defects that passed the manufacturer. Could save you the headache of sending it back to them to fix, or could save the gun from blowing up.
