safety orange question
Hello. Probably a dumb question. I have only been hunting since last year and last year only did archer . This year did archery again and will be doing rifle as well. My question is this. When rifle hunting you are required to wear orange on your head and torso. It doesn't state what kind of vest to wear. Do I have to wear an actual hunting vest. Or can I wear a work style fluorescent mesh style vest over my jacket. It only states in the digest that it be orange. But the vests I have are as I said the work mesh style vests with all the little holes in them. Just curious. Thanks in advance. And good luck to everyone tomorroe

Re: safety orange question
I believe you need 250 square inches, your mesh vest won't get it. Buy yourself a good blaze orange vest, your life depends on it.

Re: safety orange question
Orange in deer season is not something I would scrimp on. I have a blaze orange fleece jacket, hoping the arms make up for my pack (which also bears orange).
You can get a blaze orange vest for $10 at Wallmart.

Re: safety orange question
As said above the reg reads, "250 sq inches on head, chest, and back at all times." If your vest matches or exceeds that you're good to go. I always err on the "pumpkin imitation" style. If cold enough all of my clothing, will be orange. Tomorrow with the warmer forecast I plan on wearing a solid orange hat and a blaze camo vest. I'll also have my blaze camo coat if I get cold sitting 20 ft up the tree.

Re: safety orange question
Actually, I'd think the orange work vest would be fine. The mesh is tight enough as not to be an issue. I still have a few from before we went to the yellow/green everyone is wearing. A 10"x10" square equals 100 square inches. Those work vests surpass that both front back. An orange ball or tossle cap would put you well above the 250 square inch requirement. I've seen "hunting vests" with less orange than those things.

That vest is fine

Re: safety orange question
Deer are color blind, or so most 'experts' will tell you. However, I guarantee you that even the most myopic deer in the Old Deer Home will bolt and run at the slightest movement of someone wearing that vest with the reflectorized flash on it. Either that or fall over and laugh itself to death!

Re: safety orange question
I don't see an issue with your vest. Should be fine. If they're going to shoot you while you're wearing that, they were going to shoot you anyhow. Be careful, they're out there.

Re: safety orange question
Should be good. There used to be a guy selling mesh vests and hat covers at the Harrisburg outdoor show. He had aletter from the Game Commission saying that his products meet the orange requirement.
