AR in 7.62x39mm

Is it just me or is the DPMS Panther in 7.62x39 a monstrosity? If its your favorite new toy; by all means enjoy it, but it is the dumbest thing I have ever seen for all practical intents and purposes.

Why would you say that? I would much prefer that round over 5.56. I love my 5.56 but I would prefer something a bit larger. I was hoping 6.8 would take off but it doesnt appear as though it will.

The Panther comes in a lot of different size variations. Check out the LR-308T.

Also with the price of 223 it is a cheaper option. Last week I picked up a case(1000rds) for 188. It wasnt the best ammo available but it is still cheaper than the cheapest 223.

I agree. To each their own, but having an AR in 7.62 x 39 defeats the purpose of the AR. And it is a historical mismatch.

I'd imagine it would be good for someone balls deep in AR's and parts... that would like to have a second with a larger round. Or the ability to change as needed. If you had a bunch of AR parts and were familiar with its weight, shape / handling etc. It would be more of a convinience thing. Rather than switching platforms.

If your were clearing houses... or CQ, moving to the 7.62 would give you a size up, without losing penetrating or range capability as much as a 9mm.

For everyone? No. But saying it has "no place" seems silly. Options are good. The more the better.

I would say stick with an AK

The AR-10 rifle, designed by the Eugene Stoner at the Armalite division of the Fairchild Engine and Airplane Corp, seen no significant success at the time it had been introduced, but it still had some historical significance since the AR-10 served as a basis for the further development of the much more successful AR-15 / M16 series rifles. Basically, earliest AR-15 prototypes were no more than a scaled-down AR-10. The AR-10 was intended for the US Army trials for a new battle rifle, to replace the venerable M1 Garand. AR-10, with the first prototype built in 1955, came too late for these trials, and was too unconventional for conservative minds in the US Army, and consequently lost the trials to the T44 rifle, which was adopted in the 1957 as the M14. The AR-10 was ready for mass production by the 1960, but very few were made in USA. A manufacturing license had been sold to the Dutch company Artillerie Inrichtingen. Only Sudan and the Portugal apparently bought some AR-10 rifles for their military, and the production of the AR-10 had been ceased in the early or mid-1960s, with only about 10 000 military AR-10 being ever made.

What the Hell,
It gives you a platform for launching multiple calibers. Not a Bad idea as long as it works. I'm not a fan of the AR in general, But I think it's a good idea. Remember if you wanted to change an AK over to a different caliber you're going to need a whole new rifle or a machine shop, So if nothing else the AR platform shows it's a versatile weapon.

The one gun that's capable of shooting more than one caliber is nothing NEW, Even for the US Army -- The Pederson Device for the 03 Springfield and the 9mm barrels supplied with the .45 caliber M3 Grease Gun durring WWII to allow use of captured ammo are 2 that come to mind.
