Default S&W Military and Police 38

Are there any more desirable than others or more valuable? I know that may be difficult to answer, but my lgs has a mint - possibly unfired one with original box ( with the reinforced metal clips on corners in mint condition too ) that looks very interesting. It's the 4" model. Wants $500 which seems "average" to me - I think it's actually on consignment. It is flawless, just not sure it's a great deal?????

Looking them up more, guess I need to find out what model/change/etc.. Looks like a lot of different ones with varying prices. Oh well, I'll get more info. when I head over there tomorrow.

To me $500 seems high for a M&P .38 (unless it is a Victory model). But I shoot mine a lot and don't need another safe queen.

The price is OK for a mint "collectors" piece. But if your looking to shoot it a lot (and you should) with a little shopping you can find a police trade in for about $300. I got one a year ago for slightly less. Yes, it had some finish wear so you can decide what the premium is for a mint one.

It also depends on how old it is. One from the 60's and earlier then $500 is a steal. Newer ones the premium for mint starts to drop.

I'd buy it for 5 bills if I had it to spare. It is hard to go wrong with a S&W - especially if it is old and like-new in the original box.

Around these parts you'd have a bitch of a time trying to find a brandnew J-frame for under $450.

AFIAC these are the revolvers all others are judged by. If you intend to buy it and use it and shoot it as long as you maintain it properly it'll outlast you and be a worthy heirloom for one of your grandkids. It might be a little expensive compared to some of the police trade-ins but don't worry time will take of that!

The shape of the hammer and stocks and the diamond around the stock screw escusion remind me of 1940's-1950's era revolvers.

If it is really unfired- buy it for 500 and walk away happy.
...But check it very carefully. it may just be re-blued.
