    Default THE DRIVERS ! (pic)

It has been at least 10 years, probably more, since I filled out a deer tag. I just stopped hunting deer. This year is kinda' special and I will dig out my .270 and give it a whirl. One last time. I think my Doc is taking me off of the I.R. for Buck hunting on opening day. Keepin' fingers crossed.

I titled this thread 'The Drivers' and have posted a tattered picture of some of the gang. They are the DRIVERS. The rest of the camp has to be out, to set up as THE STANDERS. We are getting ready to drive the POINT. We had names for our drives. The point, the farm, the Christmas trees, the one legged, Ir's hill and others.

I loved to be a driver. Your feet never froze and you were never cold. Some of our drives covered more than a 1/2 mile. Some seemed like miles.

Being a driver you did get shootin'. When that deer broke back past the drivers they were like shooting at swiss cheese. The bullet had plenty of room to go through. Another miss and a shirt tail gets cut off tonight and hung on the un-trophy board. Lots of them are up there. A tradition.

I am in the picture. Top row, wearing a Woolrich jacket. I am a DRIVER. Hell, I was never that young. Was I ?????????????

Do you guys and gals do organized drives these days ???.

Our days are over. A lot of the gang is gone and I can visualize, one of the remaining standers / drivers bouncing down the one legged drive. Not good.

Property lines could be a problem. We were lucky. A lot of the gang were locals and we were fortunate to hunt their private property.

    TRADITIONS can live forever.

You should bring the .204 and shoot his eye out.

Tradition lives forever ....we still put drives on ....father-in-law is 86, bum knee, bum heart, bum eyeballs, but sees a deer and he is still "dead eye" ....legs don't work so well, got to take breathers, but hey, we got some young blood this year, maybe I'll be a "Stander" ....our neighbors don't yell if we cross over, so yes, drivers are still out and about ......have a good, lucky, safe year, hope you get the biggest of all of them .....

We put drives on for bears. After the first week of deer season we'll start pushing small patches of woods for deer. Hey Fossil, what a sad looking crew.

    A-5 & QTRBOR

Your right----BEST DRESSED AWARD---Never, but our driver on the extreme right looks like he stepped right out of a SEARS CATALOG.

If memory serves me right, he did get one on this drive. Yep---he sure did.

No big gang for drives anymore as most of them have passed on but we still manage some small 2-3 man drives. It's much more fun than sitting still hoping some deer decides to get up and scratch it's ear with a foot.
